WATCH: Could Roads Be Safer if Cars can 'Talk' to Each Other?

Imagine a world where cars have the ability to talk to each other--yes, like the one in Pixar's animated movie Cars. Hold on for a sec, the Cars movie analogy seems a bit weird as most of us would probably freak out if cars can really talk like humans.

However, what would it be like if cars can really communicate with each other? How will it affect the way we travel and what will be its implications in terms of road safety?

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology is a system that gives cars the ability to communicate with one another. V2V works by enabling vehicles to "wirelessly exchange information" about their speed and location. It detects surrounding vehicles and alerts the driver about potential crash threats. The V2V tech has a range of more than 300 meters and can spot potential dangers even if it's obscured by traffic, structure, terrain, or weather. Simply put, V2V gives drivers an extra set of eyes to prevent accidents.

If you're driving on a highway, the V2V tech can inform you on when it's safe to pass or overtake the vehicle in front of you. It can also tell when is the safest time to cross an intersection.

These are just some of the perks that V2V offers. Of note, the United State's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)  states that the V2V tech can prevent up to 615,000 motor vehicle crashes and it can save up to 1,366 lives.

Watch the video posted below to know more about the V2V tech and how it manages to give cars the ability to communicate with one another.
