Motorcycles in Metro Manila

Yamaha Mio Soul

For the past few years, motorcycles have been tagged as the new “ king of the road”, replacing the popular and iconic jeepney. The numbers of registered motorcycles have increased in the past decade. Today, almost 40 percent of all registered vehicles in the Philippines are motorcycles.

The streets of Metro Manila, like the rest of the country, are also dominated by these two-wheeled vehicles. Residents from Metro Manila and neighboring provinces use them daily to travel to their place of work. Others use them as a family service vehicle to transport one or two family members to certain points in the metro.

Tricycles in the metro

Tricycles, a modified motorcycle with an attached sidecar, are popular transport vehicles in Metro Manila’s subdivisions. These three-wheeled vehicles can carry four to five passengers plus their luggage.

While some cities and areas ban tricycles such as parts of Manila and the Central Business District of Makati, most of the cities allow them except on major roads. Cities like Navotas, Valenzuela and Makati often have vehicles at the entrances of housing villages and public markets.

Assortment of motorcycles

Metro Manila is filled with an assortment of motorcycles generally classified into four categories: cubs, sport motors, scooters and business types. Motorcycle riders who often commute with their motorbikes to work prefer underbones like the Honda Wave and Kawasaki Aura because of their balanced performance and value for money.

Honda Wave

Most subdivision residents also own scooters such as the Yamaha Mio and Honda Click which they use to get around their villages and to nearby places such as shopping malls. Scooters in the Philippines are usually cheap to purchase and anyone can easily avail of them because of the numerous payment options available, such as installment plans.

Small businessmen who run franchises for public tricycles prefer models such as the Kawasaki Barako and Sym Magic because of their cheap price, no fuss design and low maintenance cost.

Motoring groups

Metro Manila has a large number of Motorcycle groups who often meet on weekends to share their motoring stories and experiences. The nearby province of Rizal, with its wide and elevated roads, is a popular test drive area for motorcycles and cars alike.
