Mitsubishi Xpander Overview
With the Xpander, Mitsubishi Philippines made it pretty loud and clear that it is here to stay in the MPV category, by launching this all new vehicle in the compact MPV cars segment – a category which has seen a lot of surge in the recent past. The radical new generation styling, coupled with better fit and finish levels and contemporary features, of the Mitsubishi Xpander brought the Japanese car maker back in the game.
Mitsubishi Xpander History
Post the discontinuation of the Adventure MPV, Mitsubishi realized that if it wants to stay in the MPV game, it has to shift its approach of seeing this segment altogether. This intention materialized the development of the Mitsubishi Xpander, which is smaller than the Mitsubishi Adventure it has replaced, but looks much more contemporary and premium than it.
The first ever Mitsubishi Xpander broke the covers back in 2017, and at that time, the compact MPV was launched in a total of four different variants – GLX, GLX Plus, GLS and GLS Sport. Save for the base GLX variant which came with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the rest of the three variants were fitted with a 4-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
The Mitsubishi Xpander was then facelifted for the very first time in 2020, which saw the omission of the top-spec GLS Sport trim to make way for an all new butch looking variant named as XPander Cross. The powertrain and gearbox options were carried forward, with the MPV receiving subtle updates to the frontal look and upholstery trims on the inside.
Mitsubishi Xpander Highlight
The Mitsubishi Xpander is now available in a total of three different trims to choose from – GLX, GLX Plus and GLS. There is a new range topping variant in the form of Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, which is nothing but the standard Xpander with rugged looking bits like body cladding all around, faux skid plates on front and rear bumpers, revised fog lamp housings and different set of alloy wheels.
A 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which makes 104.5 PS of maximum power and 141 Nm of maximum torque, has been made available standard across the entire range of the Mitsubishi Xpander. While a 4-speed automatic gearbox is common in GLX Plus, GLS and Cross variants, the base GLX variant does with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The range topping GLS and Cross variants have been bestowed with some feel-good features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 6 speakers, keyless entry with push button start, driver seat height adjustment, AC vents and power outlets in all the three rows and tilt and telescopic adjustable steering.
Mitsubishi Xpander Safety
Belonging to a budget oriented compact MPV segment, the Mitsubishi Xpander is packed with a decent set of safety essentials, such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, active stability control, traction control, hill start assist, ISOFIX mounts for child seats and emergency stop signal.
Mitsubishi Xpander Fuel Consumption
The Mitsubishi Xpander is one of the most fuel efficient MPVs currently in the Philippines car market. If driven sedately, the Xpander returns a fuel economy of 21.01 km/l with the manual gearbox, while the automatic variants can return up to 22.94 km/l, which is hugely impressive.
New Mitsubishi Xpander Fuel Consumptions

Mitsubishi Xpander Pros and Cons
Mitsubishi Xpander Pros
- Sleek and stylish looks – With the Xpander, Mitsubishi ditched its image of making boring and uninspiring looking vehicles in the compact segments, thanks to the radical design language it wears.
- Spacious and comfortable cabin – All the three rows of the Mitsubishi Xpander offer ample amount of room even for taller passengers, a feature which is commendable for an MPV of its size.
- Highly fuel efficient – The petrol engine powering the Mitsubishi Xpander is highly fuel efficient, which is comparable to even vehicles from one segment below.
Mitsubishi Xpander Cons
- Lazy automatic transmission – The automatic gearbox mated to the Xpander’s engine is a bit lazy in terms of shifting times.
- Could have done with more features – While the list of safety features of the Xpander is impressive, that of comfort and convenience features could have been longer.
