Toyota Wigo Overview
With the Wigo, Toyota has made sure that it is committed to the entry-level mass-oriented car segments in the Philippines. This smallest offering from Toyota Philippines is an entry-level urban hatchback cars, which is meant to serve daily commutes with ample ease while being economic at it as well. The small size and humble configurations do make the Toyota Wigo the most affordable car from the Japanese giant and take on the likes of other micro hatchbacks like Kia Picanto, Suzuki Celerio, and Chevrolet Spark in the Philippines car market.
Toyota Wigo History
The Toyota Wigo is nothing but essentially a rebadged version of the Daihatsu Ayla, with mild redesigns at the front as well as rear design. Toyota decided to bring the Wigo to the Philippines ’ shores in 2014 after Daihatsu launched the Ayla in other ASEAN markets. Since then, the Wigo has been the most affordable car from Toyota’s portfolio in the Philippines. Since it was essentially a Daihatsu product, which is basically the more budget-oriented brand from Toyota group, the Wigo lacked a number of features and was essentially a basic car built to a cost.
Toyota gave the Wigo its first-ever facelift in 2017, which saw the hatchback receiving few additional bits to its overall package, including projector headlamps, LED tail lamps, steering-mounted audio and Bluetooth controls, dual-front airbags, and improvements in interior fit and finish levels.
The second facelift of the Toyota Wigo arrived in 2020, and with this, Toyota revamped the front fascia of the car and more premium features on the inside, including a touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control. However, in all these years, the 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine remained the mainstay with almost no changes to its power and torque.
Toyota Vios Highlight
In its latest avatar, the Toyota Wigo is in its sharpest version ever, with the bold looking front fascia and inclusion of more premium features like diamond-cut alloy wheels, touchscreen infotainment system, and automatic climate control giving it an upmarket feel over the version it has replaced. Toyota has made the Wigo available in four different variants now – E MT, G MT, G AT, and S AT, with all of them having a puny 1.0-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol motor, which makes 66 PS of maximum power and 89 Nm of peak torque. While the E MT and G MT variants get a 5-speed manual gearbox, the more premium G AT and S AT have been equipped with 4-speed automatic gearboxes. The range-topping S AT variant gets Toyota’s famed TRD Sportivo styling bits to front and rear bumpers, thus enhancing the overall sporty appeal of the car.
Toyota Wigo Safety
In its first iteration, the Toyota Wigo started off its life as a bare basic car that missed out on a number of crucial safety features, including the essential presence of airbags. The first facelift, which arrived in 2017, finally got a number of new safety features like dual front airbags, three-point seat belts, and revised side impact beams. It also got projector headlamps, which ensured better illumination levels in night driving conditions.
With the second facelift, which came in 2020, the Toyota Wigo became even more premium with new inclusions like reverse parking sensors as well as a reverse camera in its package, the latter of which has its display in the now-included touchscreen infotainment system.
Toyota Wigo Fuel Consumption
The smallest car from Toyota is also the most economic car in its current lineup. The tiny 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which is a naturally aspirated unit, ranks high in fuel efficiency levels as well, with the engine capable of returning maximum fuel efficiency of 20 kmpl.

Toyota Wigo Pros and Cons
Toyota Wigo Pros
- Ease of driving – The compact dimensions of the Toyota Wigo, coupled up with its light steering setup, makes it a breeze to drive in city traffic conditions.
- Fuel efficient – With a high fuel economy of 20 km/l, the Toyota Wigo proves to be very economic for daily commutes from point A to point B.
- Gets decent equipment level for its price – The latest iteration of the Toyota Wigo ditches the Spartan image of its predecessor versions, with premium features included in it making it feel upmarket on the inside.
Toyota Wigo Cons
- Older versions feel too basic and built-to-cost – The previous iterations of the Toyota Wigo, barring the current one, feel as if they are built to a cost, for the lack of features and below-average fit and finish levels.
- Lack of knee room at the back – While the Toyota Wigo is good enough to seat five adults, taller people might find the knee room at the back quite at a premium.
- Too light steering feedback – The super-light steering of the Toyota Wigo lacks feedback and responses when the car is driven at higher highway speeds.
