2022 Mirai gets latest Toyota Teammate advanced driver assist system

The second-gen hydrogen-powered Mirai from Toyota will now be equipped with the latest Toyota Teammate advanced driver assistance technology. The Limited variant of the premium rear-wheel-drive luxury fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) now offers Advanced Drive and Advanced Park, the former being a standard feature while the latter can be had as an optional add-on subscription service.

According to Toyota, Advanced Drive is classified as a Level 2 system as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE). It works by accurately detecting driving conditions to plan and execute acceleration, braking, and steering commands under the active supervision of the driver. It can also maintain the vehicle within the lane, follow other vehicles, change lanes, navigate certain interchanges and traffic jams and overtake slower vehicles.

That said, Advanced Drive allows hands-free driving on limited-access highways but under certain conditions with eyes-on-the-road operation. This feature, said Toyota, can help reduce fatigue during long trips and allows the driver to pay closer attention to surroundings for greater safety.

Meanwhile, the Advanced Park system allows owners to enjoy hands-free parking. The system uses a 360-degree sensor to give the driver a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and controls the vehicle’s steering, acceleration, braking, and gear changes when parallel parking or backing into a parking space.

In the US, the Limited variant of the 2022 Toyota Mirai can be purchased for US$66,000. The Advanced Drive 10-year subscription add-on sets customers back an additional US$5,170.
