5 Steps to Planning a Successful Project Car

As an avid car lover, chances are your dream car is something you could never possibly afford. That said, there's a way for you to get close to your dream as possible, and that is with a project car. By taking on a project car, you ensure that everything that goes into your vehicle is suited and tweaked to your personal taste and preference. What's more, by working on the car yourself, you can end up saving a lot of your hard-earned dough in the process. So, do you think you've got what it takes to realize your dream? Here are five steps to keep in mind to help you stay on track the whole way through.

1. Make sure you have the necessary skills

Having the necessary skills is important when it comes to a car project. If you are unsure how to remove, replace or tweak a vehicle component, read a manual, book, or reliable online resource to learn how to do it. Seek the advice of an expert technician if you have to. This will save you from committing huge mistakes during the building process.

2. Know what you want

Do you want to build a car from the ground up, or simply want to update an existing model's specs? Do you want to craft a show car, or something that you can actually drive on the road? Whether you want to restore a classic car or simply want your humble Vios to do 200 kph, knowing what you want and staying focused on that goal will help ensure that your project follows your time and budget constraints.

3. Practice restraint

Speaking of time and budget, how much time do you plan to allocate to your project? Do you plan to slave on it for weeks on end or just on your days off? Do you have sufficient funds for it? Knowing the amount of time you're willing to put into your build will ensure that you don't suddenly abandon your project. Likewise, managing your budget ensures you don’t flush your project down the tubes with excess. Pushing time and money too far and making impulsive decisions is a great way to end up with a very expensive yet incomplete ride in your garage.

4. Stick to the plan

Keeping your goal in mind from the beginning is crucial. The more you divert from your original goal, the worse your issues will become. Minimize distractions as best you can, otherwise, you'll spend more time tweaking your car than driving it. And remember: going overboard with accessories and creature comforts will only make your ride look and feel like overkill in the end.

5. Expect the unexpected

The truth is, no matter how many cars you've worked on the past, the unexpected can still happen. But it's a lot easier to think of a solution when you have a solid plan in place.

When it comes to building a car, the sky is the limit, because you can tweak your car as little or as much as your heart desires. Let these five steps to planning a successful car project serve you well.
