A Classic Chevrolet Camaro Receives the Electric Treatment

Xing Mobility, a builder of modular electric powertrains from Taiwan, has just converted a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro into a fully-electric vehicle. The transformed car, which boasts Xing's new technique to cool batteries called 'Immersion Cooled Modular Battery Pack System,' went on display last April at the AutoTronics Taipei, an international exhibition for automotive electronics.

With its modular electric vehicle (EV) powertrain, Xing looks to cash in on a potentially lucrative market--that of replacing an existing internal combustion engine (ICE) with an electric-powered unit. The Taiwanese firm claims that its modular EV system can fit the engine bay of any vehicle model. The modified 1969 Camaro is a prime example of this possibility.

As for its innovative battery cooling system, Xing immersed the cells in a non-conductive cooling fluid used in fire extinguishers. According to the company, the technique improves heat transfer between the cells and keeps their temperatures stable and consistent. This allows for faster charging, higher power generation, and longer lifespan. The fire extinguisher fluid also reduces the risk of the battery pack catching fire.

Xing CEO and co-founder Royce YC Hong tells journalists that the method they developed has been used to cool massive data servers, such as those owned by industry giants Facebook and Google. Based on a video explaining the company’s technological mission, the Taiwanese firm looks to be pursuing vehicle makers and fleet operators across the board with its stocking and interlocking modular electric powertrains.
