Auto Expo 2020: Suzuki Releases BS6-Compliant Gixxer 250

In an effort to become more environmentally friendly, India’s auto industry as a whole is transitioning to BS6-compliant fuels, and by April of this year, all vehicle manufacturers should have reconfigured their engines to meet the new emission standards. This is required for both automobile and motorcycle makers alike, and to both gasoline and diesel fuels.

And so naturally, as the manufacturers show off their wares at the Auto Expo 2020, some of the models that they will be advertising will have to meet these new compliance metrics.

Enter the BS6-ready 249cc single-cylinder Gixxer 250 bikes from Suzuki.

The Gixxer arrived in 2019 with two different variants—the Gixxer 250 and SF250. Bringing in a bit more performance than their diminutive 150cc siblings, the pair appeared ready to take on the Yamaha FZ25, India’s most popular commuter two-wheeler. Unfortunately, the Gixxer bikes launched back then weren’t BS6 compliant yet.

With the looming regulations, Suzuki is re-releasing the Gixxer 250s once again, but aside from the emissions compliance, not much has changed in the two bikes.

The same albeit tweaked 249cc single-cylinder motor remains as the power source for both bikes, replete with the revolutionary oil-cooling technology it’s known for. Horsepower stays the same at 26 hp, but comes in at 9.300 rpm—slightly higher than the outgoing model. Torque also drops by a hair, from 22.6 Nm to 22.2 Nm, but it comes 200 rpms earlier, at 7,300 rpm.

What makes Suzuki’s oil cooling system special is that it uses the engine’s own oil to cool the high pressure points, doing away with the need for additional fins to keep the engine cool. This helps make the Gixxer 250s lighter than most oil-cooled bikes on the market.

In terms of design, the Suzuki pair retains the same look as the models they replace. Although prices haven’t been announced, it is expected to stay relatively the same at INR 1.85 to 1.90 lakh (approx. PHP 132k to 136k). Fitting, since it hasn’t been a year since the lineup was introduced.

Suzuki is likely to launch the bikes in March. Given that the bikes look the same, buyers need to make sure that they’re buying the BS6 compliant version to avoid any issues come emissions testing time.
