Brembo has revealed the available braking solutions it will be offering to MotoGP teams participating in the 2023 race season.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the three advantages of using carbon disc brakes according to Brembo?

Brembo said that the three advantages of using carbon disc brakes are a reduction in unsprung mass, a constant friction coefficient from start to finish, and an absence of the residual torque issues that can be associated with steel discs.
  • What Brembo Group brand member will supply wheels to eight out of the 11 MotoGP teams for the 2023 season?

Per Brembo, Marchesini — a member of the Brembo Group — will supply wheels to eight out of the 11 MotoGP teams this year.
  • According to the Italian brake brand, its range of technical brake products — which include brake calipers, carbon discs, brake master cylinders, clutch pumps, and pads — will allow each rider to customize the braking system to best suit their individual riding style, the track, and race strategy.

The GP4 (a four-piston caliper specifically used in the MotoGP), for example, will be used by all riders on the grid.

Machined from a solid piece of aluminum, the GP4 monobloc caliper features a radial attachment, external fins, and an anti-drag system designed to increase torque during braking.

Regarding discs, Brembo will provide teams with a wide range of carbon brake discs: five different diameters with each available in two High Mass and Standard material specifications, for a total of ten solutions.

Brembo pointed out that carbon discs provide three advantages: a reduction in unsprung mass, a constant friction coefficient from start to finish, and an absence of the residual torque issues that can be associated with steel discs.

The majority of riders, the Bergamo-based brand believes, are expected to go for 340-millimeter (mm) diameter discs, split between High and Standard Mass. However, some teams may continue to use both types of 320mm diameter discs.

Also available are two ventilated disc options that come in 340mm and 355mm sizes. The two are solutions designed specifically for racing in circuits that are very tough on braking, such as Spielberg, Motegi, Sepang, or Buriram.

Brembo also revealed that on top of working with MotoGP teams for the 2023 season, the brake solutions provider will also be involved in Moto2 and Moto3.

For Moto2, Brenbo will offer teams its new four-piston finned caliper, with design and technology derived from MotoGP. For Moto3, on the other hand, the brake firm will offer its two-piston finned calipers.

As for discs, teams participating in Moto2 and Moto3 will have a choice depending on the strictness of the circuit: finned steel disc or standard disc (with a specific operating temperature).

Additionally, SBS Friction and J.Juan — two brands under the Brembo Group — will also supply parts for some of the Moto2 and moto3 teams.

SBS Friction is a leader in developing, producing, and distributing aftermarket brake pads and friction materials for motorcycles, scooters, all-terrain vehicles, cars, and industrial applications, while J.Juan is a leader in developing and producing metal-braided brake hoses and brake system components for the motorcycle industry.
