Meet De Tomaso's Extremely Stunning P72 Supercar

This car knocked the wind out of us a bit. In fact, it took us a couple of seconds to convince ourselves that the newly-revived De Tomaso P72 isn't just a gorgeous, retro-glam art that's meant solely for display.

What's more,  its timing is just right. The P72 made its way at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom--just in time for De Tomaso's 60th Year Anniversary.

According to Carscoops, the newest De Tomaso P72 took inspiration from the LeMans 1960 race cars, although they added a bit of twist to the design to give it a "modern-day" classic vibe with a bit of flair thrown in as well.

Jowyn Wong, designer for the P72, explained: "Beneath the surface, the interior showcases an elaborated combination of design and exotic materials. Polished copper and diamond pattern detailing adorn the cabin, fashioning a true sense of drama and occasion. The classically designed switchgear and circular analogue display dials take inspiration from the timeless design themes of the 60s and 70s era."

P70 with a modern twist

The P72's roots can be traced back to the De Tomaso P70--a collaboration between company founder Alejandro de Tomaso (Engineering), Caroll Shelby (Finance), and Peter Brock (Design). Unveiled in 1965 at the Turin show, it met an untimely demise when Shelby withdrew his backing of the project. De Tomaso was able to find another backer for it and envisioned it as a sports racing car. Still, it was short-lived, and was raced only once at the 1966 Mugello Grand Prix.

Today, the P70's spirit lives on with the P72, which can be seen particularly in the small accents found all over the vehicle.

"We intentionally incorporated a distinctive aerodynamically optimized body for performance and to modernize the aesthetics, while the classic wing mirrors and front emblem cap pay homage to the P70," said Wong.

All in the family

So far, they haven't released any technical details about it yet, and the only information we gathered was that it shares the same carbon fiber chassis with Apollo Automobil GmbH's Intensa Emozione.

Interestingly, Apollo Automobil GmbH was bought by Hong Kong consortium Ideal Team Venture--owner of the De Tomaso marque. What's more, Apollo and De Tomaso also shared the same designing team for both the Intensa Emozione and P72: Jowyn Wong's Design.

Limited production

De Tomaso will only produce 72 units of P72s, so these vehicles would be rare collectibles in the future. And if you're wondering how much it costs, the price tag is almost a whopping USD1 million--or USD850,000 (over PHP43 million) to be exact.
