MMDA installs more hazard markers on EDSA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has intalled additional hazard markers located on top of concrete barriers along EDSA.

Aimed to barriers  more visible for motorists, yellow flashing lights have been placed strategically along EDSA's northbound lane. Several markers are also installed in front of MMDA approaching Orense Street, just before Shaw Boulevard underpass.

“Seven out of ten units of 300mm yellow flashing lights have been placed in strategic locations on EDSA for additional road guidance for motorists,” MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said.

Aside from these locations, there are also additional hazard markers placed on EDSA's southbound lane, particularly in the following locations: before Cubao underpass; approach of Santolan-MRT Station; in front of Megamall approach of Shaw Boulevard-MRT Station split road; approach of Guadalupe-MRT station; and in front of San Carlos Seminary.

“We are still planning on where to place the other three units of yellow flashing lights,” Lim added.

Aside from the yellow flashing lights, the MMDA has already installed six units of bollards yellow flashing lights.

Two of these lights were installed on the northbound lane of EDSA, specifically at Kalayaan and Pioneer. Meanwhile, four more flashing lights  were placed on the southbound portion of EDSA, which include: Scout Borromeo; after Santolan-MRT station; after Ortigas MRT station; and after Guadalupe station.

It can be remembered that the concrete barriers in EDSA were installed at the start of the general community quarantine (GCQ). They occupied the left side of the entire stretch of EDSA, which separated bus lanes from private vehicle lanes.

Accident reports involving these EDSA barriers became noticeable this month, with MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago, as quoted in a Philippine Star report, saying that at least 18 casualties were recorded from June 1 to June 19 alone.

Many of these mishaps involved self-accidents caused by concrete barriers that the drivers failed to notice, especially at night.
