MMDA sets 12 interim bus stops, more to follow

DOTR and MMDA

A total of 12 interim buses are already in place along EDSA, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) revealed recently.

During a meeting last June 25 between the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and MMDA last June 25, MMDA Assistant General Manager for Operations Roberto Almadin stated that they have already completed 12 interim bus stops for the project, and will finish more within the week.

The meeting, which took place at MMDA's Headquarters in Makati City , was led by Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and other MMDA officials who gave updates regarding the construction of interim bus stops  at the innermost lanes of the said main highway.

Moreover, Alamadin said that they are currently hastening the delivery of the procured concrete barriers that will be used erect the barriers for the EDSA busway.

Present in the meeting were MMDA Chairman Danny Lim, MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia, MMDA Spokesperson Celine Pialago, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Martin Delgra III, DOTr Undersecretary for Finance Garry de Guzman, DOTr Road Sector Consultant Albert Suansing, and DOTr Assistant Secretaries for Road Transport and Infrastructure Mark Steven Pastor and Mark Richmund de Leon.

The meeting also discussed the progress of their other ongoing development project, which was the creation of bike lanes in EDSA.

It can be remembered that the MMDA has started marking the bike lanes last June 13. Their goal is to finish the installation of bike lane barriers within the third quarter of the year.

Meanwhile, Secretary Tugade expressed his full support on their creation, which he said was a priority for the DOTr following the bike lanes that have been opened in Taguig City.

Taguig's 5.8-kilometer bike lane along the Laguna Lake Highway was launched in February 2019 as part of the "Bike-Friendly Taguig Ordinance" that the local government signed this June.

In a bid to push biking as an important step to promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, the three-meter wide stretch of road is considered the first protected bike lane that was set along a national highway in the country. It also serves as prototype for new roads and existing roads that can accommodate a bike lane.

Taguig's bike lanes took center stage in time for the World Bicycle Day that was celebrated last June 3. Aside from setting up a three-day demo showcasing bike lanes along Cayetano Boulevard and Bayani Roads, the event also introduced a renovated version of the protected bike lanes along the C6 Road.
