Nissan Navara PHEV, Primera EV PH launch set on November

MANILA: After being highlighted at the Philippine International Motor Show last June, Nissan Philippines announced that the formal introduction of the Navara Pro PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) and Primera EV (electric vehicle) will be held in November.

With this, Nissan executives said that the soon-to-be-launched models will carry the same value proposition regardless of where they are manufactured. 

To note, the two arriving vehicles are produced in partnership with Dongfeng Motor via the Dongfeng Zhengzhou Nissan joint venture.

“Regardless of where the model comes from, all of Nissan’s products are high quality,” Nissan Philippines President Yoshinori Kanazawa shared.

For his part, Nissan Management Committee for Japan and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Chair Shohei Yamazaki explained that the development of the Nissan Navara Pro PHEV and Primera EV in China was due to the absence of production facilities for these models in the marque’s home country.

According to the executive, the lack of demand for pickup trucks in Japan resulted in the firm deciding to develop the Nissan Navara Pro PHEV in China and manufacture it in countries with strong demand.

“For example, this segment (referring to pickup trucks), almost nothing in Japan. No pickup market in Japan, and we cannot produce, develop those cars for Japan market,” Yamazaki said.

He also noted that due to the popularity of kei cars and hatchbacks in the Land of the Rising Sun, few customers choose a low-slung five-seater sedan. Aside from that, battery-electric vehicles have a limited following since hybrid electric vehicles are more popular there.

“There is no sedan market in Japan—anymore. So, we cannot produce, develop for Japan. But still, there are some sedan markets in China,” he shared.

“Japanese customers love e-POWER. Japanese EV penetration is probably lowest in the world—only one or two percent. Very low, however hybrid or e-POWER is very popular in Japan,” he added. 

Moreover, Yamazaki expressed his firm belief that the two models will do well in the Philippines, as the Chinese automotive industry has performed well in recent years. He added that such progress has further reinforced the two models’ potential in the country.

“The reason why we are going to export those models outside China—or Philippines—is China automotive industry or China automotive trend since five years ago, since 2021, is actually leading the market in terms of technology, in terms of speed, in terms of cost, therefore, we were proud of our achievements in China… therefore, now, we are going to demonstrate what we have achieved in China,” Yamazaki explained. 

“Sorry for making you wait, but now you can feel, drive, buy, those two models,” he added.
