Toyota launches 299-hp GR Corolla in Japan

Toyota’s motorsports division, Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR), has launched the GR Corolla in Japan. It is offered in two variants, GR Corolla RZ and GR Corolla Morizo Edition.

Both Toyota GR Corolla models share the same 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that is originally fitted on the Toyota GR Yaris. The powerplant is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

According to Toyota, both the GR Corolla RZ and GR Corolla Morizo Edition make 299 horsepower (hp) with 370 to 400Nm of torque.

Similarly, both variants get the GR-Four 4WD system, which has been optimized through the development of a hydrogen-engine Corolla to match the specifications of the GR Corolla.

Unique to the Toyota GR Corolla RZ, however, is a four-seater layout. That said, it allows owners to achieve a high level of balance between daily usability and driving pleasure.

Meanwhile, the Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition has a two-seater setup. By reducing the seats, Toyota explained, the weight of the car is reduced. This alongside increased engine torque, optimized transmission gear ratios, and improved cornering execution through the use of monotube shock absorbers and high-performance tires make the Morizo Edition a vehicle suited for more than just the road.

Per Toyota only 500 units of the Japanese domestic market (JDM)-spec GR Corolla RZ will be made while the GR Corolla Morizo Edition is limited to just 70. They are priced at ¥5.25 million (P2.145 million) and ¥7.15 million (P2.921 million), respectively.
