Toyota announced that it has partnered with Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (Tepco) to build a stationary storage battery system.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Where will Toyota and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (Tepco) build their stationary storage battery system?

Per Toyota, the stationary storage battery system will be built in the Eurus Tashirotai Wind Farm by Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation.
  • When will Toyota and Tepco begin the verification project for their stationary storage battery system?

According to Toyota, the verification project for their stationary storage battery system will begin in the fall (from mid-September to December) of 2023.
  • The said storage battery system will be built to address the foreseeable demand and needs for energy storage relating to “environmental and economic improvement, participation in the electric power market, and as BCP (business continuity plan) measures.”

According to the Japanese carmaker, the abovementioned project combines Tepco’s operating technology and safety standards for stationary storage batteries as well as Toyotas system technology for electrified vehicle storage batteries.

The stationary storage battery system, Toyota pointed out, will be compatible with existing equipment that connects storage batteries as a direct current power source to supply alternating current power to the electric power system and various electrical equipment.

This, Toyota explained, can be achieved by connecting multiple storage batteries for electric vehicles.

For Tepco’s part, the electric power company will use the knowledge and technological capabilities it has cultivated in the electric power business to improve the utilization of renewable energy and meet the BCP needs of its customers. Further, it will maintain the balance between supply and demand of electric power to build a stable energy supply system.

Toyota added that, in addition to aiming for a carbon-neutral mobility society, it will work with Toyota Industries Corporation, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Denso Corporation to utilize storage batteries for electrified vehicles that are safe, long-lasting, high quality, low cost, and high performance.

Both Toyota and Tepco will run a verification project of their storage battery system. The results will be evaluated and used to develop storage battery systems with an eye toward consumer-oriented energy services and balancing electricity supply and demand capabilities in order to meet the energy storage needs of customers.

The verification project will run in the fall (from mid-September to December) of 2023.
