Volkswagen Surpasses 250,000 Milestone for Electric Vehicles

Right before the year ended, German marque Volkswagen managed to score another feat: passing the 250,000 electric vehicle milestone.   The 250,000th electrified vehicle is a pure white Volkswagen e-Golf that was delivered at the Autostadt in mid December. “With the 250,000th electrified vehicle, the Volkswagen brand has reached a major milestone on the way to carbon-neutral mobility. Especially all-electric vehicles such as our new ID. family are the answer to major challenges of our times. They offer considerable driving pleasure and advantages we could only dream of a few years ago. They have a carbon-neutral balance, offer more space with comparable outside dimensions, and are quiet, highly efficient, economical and inexpensive to maintain. This is why we will be selling the next 250,000 electrified vehicles in a considerably shorter period of time. At Volkswagen, we are convinced that the future is electric,” says Jürgen Stackmann, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales.

Volkswagen’s electrified model range has been continuously growing since the introduction of the e-up! in 2013. This was followed by the e-Golf and the Golf GTE in 2014, the Passat GTE and Passat Variant GTE in 2015. The e-Golf is the most successful model with 104,000 units sold, followed by the Golf GTE with 51,000 units, the Passat Variant GTE with 42,000 sold, and the e-up! With 21,000 units sold.

Volkswagen currently has three electric cars in their lineup, the e-up!, the e-Golf, and the Passat GTE, with other variants available in other countries such as China and the UK. Starting 2020, Volkswagen will also begin production on their ID lineup, a string of futuristic fully electric vehicles. The first ID cars are expected to appear on Europe’s roads in the summer.

Volkswagen’s electrified lineup seemed to gain traction as planned, as they now plan to push out a million electric vehicles by 2023, 2 years earlier than they had originally anticipated. The VW group predicts that with the recent growing market for electrified vehicles, the brand expects to sell 1.5 million electric cars by 2025. Over the next few years, Volkswagen intends to become the world market leader in e-mobility.
