Toyota Hiace Overview
Amongst all the large vans on sale in the country, the Toyota Hiace has consistently ranked as the highest selling and most popular nameplate in the category. The legendary reliability, supreme comfort levels and ease of ownership has made the Toyota Hiace a trustworthy nameplate in the automobile world. Despite its premium positioning, it continues to be the top favorite of all kinds of buyers, making it one of the undisputable vehicles currently available.
Toyota Hiace History
Toyota kick-started making the Hiace as its flagship and biggest people mover back in its home market in Japan back in 1977. However, the Philippines car market got the Toyota Hiace only in 2000, with the globally fourth generation model. The Japanese car maker then brought the fifth generation model in 2005, which continued to be on sale in the Philippines for the next fourteen years.
Then in 2019, Toyota Philippines gave the Hiace a substantial upgrade in the form of all-new sixth generation model, and categorized this people mover in three different versions – basic (Commuter), premium (GL Grandia and GL Grandia Tourer) and luxury (Super Grandia). This move enabled Toyota to offer different types of Hiace to different sets of buyers depending on their feature requirements and budget constraints.
Toyota Hiace Highlight
With the currently on sale sixth generation model, the Toyota Hiace is now available in a wide range of choices. First comes the basic Commuter version, which is basically a bare basic version of the van in terms of features. It even misses out on the body painted bumpers and door handles, and is available in a single variant.
Moving up the ladder, one can have the Toyota Hiace in the GL Grandia and GL Grandia Tourer variants, both of which offer a slightly more upmarket appeal and additional features in and out over the basic Commuter version. Both the GL Grandia and GL Grandia Tourer differ on the basis of seating configuration, with the latter having an extra fourth row of seats and increased wheelbase.
The range topping Super Grandia variant of the Toyota Hiace is targeted towards those buyers who prefer premium and luxurious appeal on the inside. It has a number of comfort and convenience features, which makes it a super comfortable and posh vehicle to start with.
All these variants of the Toyota Hiace are powered by the same 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, however, the power and torque outputs differ as per the variants on sale. The basic Commuter range comes standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and the engine in it makes 176 PS of power and 420 Nm of torque. The GL Grandia variant comes with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options, with the manual version putting up 176 PS of power and 420 Nm of torque, while the automatic one churns out 450 Nm of torque.
The GL Grandia Tourer variant too is available with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options, with power and torque outputs of 163 PS and 420 Nm respectively in both the versions. The range topping Super Grandia has the same engine available with a standard 6-speed automatic gearbox, which puts up 176 PS of power and 450 Nm of torque.
Toyota Hiace Safety
While the Commuter version of the Toyota Hiace is equipped with essentials only like dual front airbags, ABS and reverse parking sensors, the GL Grandia and GL Grandia Tourer pack in additional things like vehicle stability control, brake assist, hill start assist and reverse camera. The top-spec Super Grandia variant, to justify its premium appeal, also gets side, curtain and driver knee airbags, front parking sensors, pre collision system, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beam.
Toyota Hiace Fuel Consumption
The sheer size of the Toyota Hiace makes it a not-so-fuel efficient vehicle to begin with. However, the van is capable of returning 12 km/l for the automatic variants and 14 km/l for the manual ones at most, which are pretty decent figures.
New Toyota Hiace Fuel Consumptions
- Toyota Hiace 2021: 12 KM/L
Used Toyota Hiace Fuel Consumptions
- Toyota Hiace 2020: 12 KM/L
- Toyota Hiace 2018: 10.5 KM/L
Toyota Hiace Pros and Cons
Toyota Hiace Pros
- Great comfort levels – All the variants of the Toyota Hiace, even the basic Commuter version, offer supreme levels of comfort, with all the seats coming with well cushioned under thigh support and bolstering.
- Undisputable reliability – The Toyota Hiace is known for its bulletproof reliability, thanks to its rugged mechanical underpinnings and durable engine.
- Low maintenance costs for a vehicle of this size – The Toyota Hiace, being a large people mover, has low cost of ownership, with lowest maintenance costs in the segment.
Toyota Hiace Cons
- Lack of features in lower variants – Despite their higher pricing, the lower variants of the Toyota Hiace offer lower than expected features on board.
- Engine refinement – While the engine is praiseworthy for its long term durability, it scores low on refinement levels, with the engine being extremely audible as the revs rise.
