10 Tips for New Drivers

hand on the wheel

First times are always nerve-wracking affairs. If you’re getting behind the wheel for the first time, here are some tips to help you stay safe on the road!

1. Get to know your car.

And by getting to know your car, we mean taking the time to learn how to use it. Before you set off, learn how everything in the car works, like the headlights, radio, or the wipers. What if it rains? With a weather like ours, a downpour is highly likely to happen suddenly. Don’t wait for things to happen. Anticipate them.

2. Be observant of everything outside of your car.

Always be attentive of your outside environment. Observe the traffic signs and keep on the lookout for pedestrians or animals crossing the road. Remember, the road is not only yours; it’s for everyone.

3. Obey the traffic rules.

Rules and regulations are there for a reason. One of those is to keep everyone safe. Respect the law by obeying them. For example, observing proper speed limit. Avoid speeding because you won’t have enough time to react when something happens!

4.Avoid distractions.

You may have passed your driving exam and received your license, but you’re still new on the road. Remember, you use more than just your sense of sight and touch in driving. You multitask when you drive, that’s why your focus should always be on driving alone. That said, you’re still not used to it, so keep the phone away and focus on driving!

5.Keep calm and stay cool.

At some point, you will make mistakes on the road, and these may come with altercations that will test your patience. Yes, we know that it’s not that easy to keep your feelings in check when faced with an inconvenient situation, but believe us when we say that nothing good will come out of lashing out.

Road rage is already a common occurrence these days. Don’t add to the growing numbers of cases! A couple of words can quickly escalate to a physical fight. It can sometimes lead to a fatal end, so better keep a tight lid on those emotions!

6.Practice.

How can you hone your skills if you don’t drive often? Take the initiative to drive in rough conditions so you’ll get used to the feeling. If you can, also practice driving when you’re picking up groceries, getting a burger, or going shopping. It will help you in honing your skills without the pressure of the ticking clock.

You know what they say about practice! But rather than making your driving skills perfect, practicing will make you confident enough to drive on the road.

7.If you can, stick to the routes you’re already familiar with.

Since you’re still new, it will be easier for you to drive to places you already know the way to. Driving around the routes you know will also help you get used to driving.

However, if you stray from your path, you’ll most likely end up somewhere completely unfamiliar, making your driving experience more difficult (especially if you have a set destination at a set time).

8. Go with someone experienced if you’re heading to unfamiliar routes for the first time.

If you’re heading out to unfamiliar routes, proper planning will help make your journey easier. Take someone experienced to guide you through the route. And if you’re going to come back alone, try again on a time where you’re not racing against the clock.

9. Wear your seatbelt all the time.

Buckle up! Ensure that your passengers do the same. These safety devices can prevent you from being thrown around inside the car, minimize injuries, as well as even save your life in the event of a crash. That said, wearing seatbelts is a necessary precautionary measure for your safety.

10. Assume that everyone else on the road is stupid.

The trick to this advice is that you’ll be prepared when something does happen. Assuming everyone else as idiots would prompt you to drive defensively. And when something does happen, you won’t be surprised and thus, are ready for it.

Remember, you will eventually make mistakes, but don’t be discouraged from driving. You’ll still learn from them, after all. Even those who have driven for decades still make mistakes! Enjoy your experience and you’ll surely get the hang of it.
