BMW gives iX3 styling and tech tweaks

BMW has given the electric version of its X3, the iX3, with updates inside and out. Production for the new iX3 will start in China on September.

The iX3's kidney (faux) grille was largened, headlights were slimmed by 10 millimeters, and the front apron was reshaped. "BMW i blue" accents front and rear, which denote that the car is an EV, are retained from the pre-updated car.

The "first model to feature fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology" features M Sport package as standard. That includes new 20-inch M aerodynamic wheels, as well as a sports suspension that's said to lower the ride height by 74 millimeters compared to a regular X3.

Also standard are adaptive LED headlights, while Laserlight can be ordered as an option.

The iX3's drive system with electric motor, transmission, and power electronics are housed in a space-saving arrangement in the rear axle subframe. A total of 286hp and 400Nm of torque are sent to the rear wheels only, to help the SUV sprint from standstill to 100kph in 6.8 seconds, and to travel all the way to 460 kilometers.

The 80kWh battery allows direct current (DC) fast-charging at a rate of up to 150kW. A 10-minute fast charge adds around 100 kilometers of claimed range, while "user-friendly and low-cost charging in the international BMW Charging network" can be had from a single registration.

"Familiar BMW i holistic approach to sustainability " was done throughout the manufacturing of the iX3. "Secondary raw materials" were used to build the electric motor, inside of rare earth metals, as BMW Group said it monitored the procurement process for cobalt and lithium for high-voltage batteries. Green energy was used to make the battery and the entire car.

Inside, the infotainment screen is now combined to a 12.3-inch instrument cluster with an enlarged control display to match the size. the gear selector, BMW Controller, the push button start, and the buttons for the Driving Experience Control switch and handbrake all see design updates.

The sport seats of the iX3 are now wrapped in a new Sensatec perforated upholstery variant, and interior trim strips are finished in Aluminum Rhombicle dark finish, which all come as standard. Accents on the gear selector lever, push button start, and steering wheel likewise saw the "i Blue' treatment.

There are two iX3 equipment lines available, called “Inspiring” and "Impressive."

The former includes metallic paintwork, adaptive suspension, automatic tailgate operation, a panoramic glass roof, electrically adjustable seats, a sport leather steering wheel, a storage package, and a three-zone automatic climate control system with pre-heating and pre-conditioning function.

“Impressive” adds 20-inch light-alloy wheels, acoustic glazing, Vernasca leather trim, BMW Head-Up Display, Harman Kardon surround sound system and BMW IconicSounds Electric.

A selection of driver assistance systems come as standard, including Driving Assistant Professional with the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, automatic Speed Limit Assist, and route monitoring. These go on top of the reversing camera and sensors.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional, with cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, also come with every iX3. standard. The usual Apple CarPlay and Android Auto continue the list of tech toys, as are the remote software upgrade from BMW Connected.
