BMW in North America issues Toyota GR Supra recall

BMW North America has issued a recall for the 2020 Toyota GR Supra after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) released a statement saying that its “engine management software may cause loss of braking assist.”

Those puzzled by BMW’s move to issue a recall for the Toyota Supra could look back at the history of the Japanese sports car. The 2020 Toyota Supra isn’t exactly all JDM. In fact, the Toyota Supra has BMW blood in it. It borrows a BMW powerplant as well as other interior amenities.

That said, when recalls are made, it’s BMW that has to step in. And BMW has done that for quite some time now as this recall is actually the Supras’ seventh.

From 2019 to 2020, the Toyota Supra has been recalled for several reasons including “improperly welded seat belt guide loop mount,” “no back-up camera display image,” “loss of headlight function,” “possible damage to steering gear tie rods,” horizontal headlamp adjustment issues,” and “possible failure of fuel tank weld.”

It’s good to note that the 2020 Toyota Supra is built in the same plant as the BMW Z4 in Graz, Austria. That’s why other BMW models like the 2020 M340i, M340i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, X3 M40i, 2020-2021 X4 M40i, 745Le xDrive, 2019-2021 Z4 M40i were included in the said NHTSA recall.

The traffic safety agency says that to remedy the said fault, “dealers will update the engine management software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 1, 2021.”

The NHTSA says the potential number of units affected is at astound 50,000.
