BMW to launch i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 in the US by Q1 2022

BMW recently announced the addition of two i4 models: the i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50.

On the outside, these models sport similar measurements (4,782.82mm x 1,851.66mm x 1,447.8mm) with a few variations in terms of design and exterior amenities.

The i4 eDrive40 has more of a simple yet elegant appeal while the i4 M50 offers a more aggressive, sporty look.

Inside, these cars reflect what is expressed by their exteriors. The i4 eDrive40 offers a slim and low instrument panel that seats the innovative BMW Curved Display.

The i4 M50, on the other hand, has a more performance-focused cockpit with additional raised knee pads on the center console.

Both vehicles are powered by BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive technology. The system combines the electric motors, power electronics, charging system, and high-voltage battery into one compact unit that measures only 4.3 inches.

The i4 eDrive40 will have a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) system while the i4 M50 will have all-wheel drive (AWD).

According to BMW, the i4 eDrive40 gran coupe will be capable of putting out 335hp while the i4 M50 fully-electric performance model will be capable of generating 536hp.

The i4 eDrive40 will provide an estimated range of up to 300 miles.

On the other hand, the i4 M50 will have an estimated range of 245 miles.

Other notable features on both i4 models are lift-related shock absorbers, rear air suspension, electromechanical steering with Servotronic function, integrated braking system, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, and near-actuator wheel slip limitation.

In addition, the i4 M50 will have adaptive M suspension with individually configured springs and shocks, specially designed anti-roll bars, and an additional spring strut tower brace in the front end, along with variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, and M light-alloy wheels up to 20 inches in diameter with mixed-size tires.

Safety remains BMW’s top priority and equips the i4 models with an extensive range of driver assistance systems including Level 2 automated driving features like speed limit assist using active cruise control with Stop&Go function.

Other safety features include frontal collision warning, lane departure warning, and Driving Assistant Professional which adds steering and lane control assistant, active navigation, active side collision protection, emergency stop assistant, and evasion assistant.

Parking the fully electric i4 models are made easy thanks to the rearview camera, back-up assistant, and parking assist plus.

Both the i4 eDrive40 and the i4 M50 will be made available in the US in the first quarter of 2020.
