The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that the government agency is looking to begin detailed engineering design (DED) activities for the Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island Bridges in the first quarter of 2023.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What engineering services are involved in the planned DED activities by DPWH?

Per Sadain, the engineering services are involved in the planned DED activities by DPWH include preliminary design covering review of the feasibility study and preliminary and basic design, among others.
  • How many bridges are planned for the Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island Bridges project?

The Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island Bridges project will see the construction of two sea-crossing bridges connecting Panay Island, Guimaras Island, and Negros Island in Region 6.
  • Per DPWH Undersecretary Emil Sadain, the engineering services involved in the DED activities are preliminary design covering review of the feasibility study and preliminary and basic design; detailed engineering design including estimation of detailed construction cost; and procurement assistance.

Senior Undersecretary Sadain together with Pulupandan, Negros Occidental Mayor Miguel Antonio Peña, and the five DPWH Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Project Directors namely Benjamin Bautista, Sharif Madsmo Hasim, Ramon Arriola III, Rodrigo Delos Reyes, and Soledad Florencio conducted an on-ground assessment on November 10, 2022, of the proposed location of road approach at the Negros Island side.

The 32.47-kilometer (km) Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island Bridges project is a large and complex project that requires comprehensive and high-standard engineering works to be serviced by consultants who have extensive experience in long-span bridges, which will help DPWH prepare for the construction in an efficient and timely manner.

It is composed of two sea-crossing bridges connecting Panay Island, Guimaras Island, and Negros Island in Region 6.

The linkage between Guimaras-Negros will comprise a sea-crossing bridge with an approximate length of 13.1km, road approaches with an approximate total length of 5.4km, and road connectors of 0.87km, with a total length of 19.4km.

On the other hand, the linkage between Panay-Guimaras or Section A will comprise a sea-crossing bridge with an approximate length of 4.97km and a road approach with an approximate total length of 8.03km, with a total length of 13.0km.

Once the interlink bridges are constructed, the travel time of commuters and motorists as well as the transport of goods from Panay to Negros Islands through ferries or via the Roll-on, Roll-off ships (Ro-Ro) will be shortened from three to four hours to just less than one hour.
