Dream Drive Lullaby Helps Parents Put their Kids to Sleep

If you’re still under the notion that hybrid cars are slow, boring vehicles, think again. As the trend of hybrids and EVs continues to rise, more and more automakers load these EVs with amazing features that make them stand out above the rest. As one of the most well rounded EVs in the world, the Nissan Leaf is one of the best cars to get if you want a zero emissions vehicle but want to stick to a budget. And now, Nissan has just added a unique feature to the Leaf, aimed directly at families with small children. This as Nissan created a world-first lullaby specifically designed for electric vehicles. In collaboration with Sound Designer and Sleep Coach Tom Middleton, Nissan conceived the 'Dream Drive' lullaby. This works by using frequencies produced by a humming combustion engine, combined with the sounds of the Nissan Leaf to create hypnotic sounds that resonate within the cabin, helping send young children to sleep in the car. "Nissan’s zero-emission lullaby combines early auditory development research with creative strategy and is inspired by the audible and inaudible sounds of the Nissan LEAF," says Sound Designer, Tom Middleton. "Together with Nissan, we are finding innovative, health and safety-conscious ways to apply functional sound within EVs that goes beyond the vehicle itself, effectively inspiring a new generation of purpose-driven, human-first car design and functionality. It is the world’s first collaboration with a car as featured artist. In addition to the combustion engine frequencies that only children can hear – which help lull them to sleep – every sound you can hear comes from building an orchestra of sounds and rhythms from interior and exterior recordings of the LEAF." Around 70% of parents in the UK believe that the movement of the vehicle is what sends their child to sleep, but research reveals the soothing sound frequencies of internal combustion engines are also a major contributor to children nodding off in the car. Paul Speed-Andrews, Nissan’s Noise and Vibration development manager, says: “Although an electric vehicle like the Nissan LEAF is a more environmentally considerate choice for ‘dream driving’; the quiet soundscape of an EV might not be as effective as internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. Combustion engines transmit a sound frequency, a combination of white, pink and brown noise varied in tone – creating an orchestral soundscape that is soothing and comforting to young children.” As of now, the Nissan Leaf isn’t available in the Philippines just yet, but there have been talks of introducing the model by this year.
