Electric Ford Mustang Cobra Jet prototype exceeds test expectations


Gone are the days when all-electric cars could only dream of matching up with the hyper-performance capabilities of the combustion-equipped brethren.

Following the footsteps of Tesla’s 3.0-second speedsters, Ford has now built the all-electric Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype, which has been recorded to blaze through a quarter-mile (0.4kms) in 8.27secs at 168mph (270kmph) while reaching 1,502 peak wheel horsepower in recent private development testing.


Exceeding expectations, these numbers are equal to the combined output of more than three 2021 Mustang GT V8 engines.

The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype was developed by Ford Performance in parallel to the recently unveiled Mustang Mach-E 1400 prototype, with both cars designed to demonstrate Ford’s technological capabilities and innovation skillset in EV technologies.

"Since revealing the car, we’ve continued to fine-tune it and now know we're just scratching the surface of what we may be able to achieve with this much electric horsepower in a drag racing setting,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports.

To build the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype’s powertrain, Ford Performance collaborated with Cascadia Motion in crafting four PN-250-DZR inverters linked to a pair of DS-250-115 dual stack electric motors, giving four motors total and spinning at up to 10,000 revolutions per minute. These motor-inverter packages run at 800 volts and up to 700 amps, with maximum output of 350kW per motor.

This potent propulsion package is managed by an advanced data and control system—jointly developed by Ford Performance and vehicle control unit (VCU) manufacturer AEM-EV—that features a control algorithm unique to the Cobra Jet 1400.


The sheer raw power of the four electric motors combined also required a fresh approach to chassis tuning. With the help of MLe Racecars, Ford’s build and integration collaborator for the project, the Cobra Jet finally had a chassis stable enough to withstand the combined electric motors’ punishing loads.

The Blue Oval showcased its latest prototype at the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) US Nationals last September 3, an event it described as “the perfect venue to showcase the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400.”

"Drag racing has always been where Detroit proves its most advanced powertrains,” said Brad Gerber, Vice President of sales and chief development officer at the NHRA, adding that his group looks forward to “continuing discussions with Ford about the future of electrification in drag racing.”


“Our fans are fascinated by horsepower in all forms, and the electrification of an iconic vehicle like the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 shows that innovation at Ford Motor Company never rests,” Gerber concluded.
