Ford Mustang Mach-E receives Top Safety Pick award from US IIHS

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the EV SUV version of the brand’s longest-running nameplates. The electrified ‘Stang did not only allow the Blue Oval to earn a portion of the growing EV market segment, but also added to the company’s long list of accolades and recognitions, like the “Top Safety Pick” award from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) given to the Mustang Mach-E.

Ford’s EV SUV aced all six IIHS crashworthiness tests with good ratings — the top possible results in those categories. The six crashworthiness tests include driver- and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints.

Contributing to its recognition is the good-rated LED projector headlights on its top-spec variants: Premium, GT, and First Edition Mustang Mach-E.

“This award validates the efforts of the Mustang Mach-E team to create an electric vehicle that not only turns heads, but helps keep our customers and their passengers safe,” said Ford Chief Product Platform and
Operations Officer, Hau Thai-Tang. “We continue to prioritize safety performance for our entire portfolio,” he added.

According to Ford, the Mustang Mach-E earned superior ratings due to its standard vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian accident avoidance system evaluations as the IIHS takes into account not only how a vehicle performs in the event of a crash, but also how likely it is to prevent one.

The Mach-E comes with standard safety features like driver-assist technologies included in the brand’s Ford Co-Pilot 360 across the board. Ford packs all Mach-E models with features like blind spot information system (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping system, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency brakes, post-collision braking, reverse brake assist, reverse-sensing system, and connected built-in navigation systems, and more.

In a study conducted by the IIHS, they found that electric vehicles like the Mach-E EV SUV are safer compared to traditional ICE-powered models. Injury claims made by EV owners are 40 percent lower than owners of conventional vehicles.

However, it’s good to note that while the Mach-E earned the Top Safety Pick from IIHS, it did not qualify for the Top Safety Pick+. What prevented the Mach-E from nabbing the “+” is the marginal rating its lower trim levels received from IIHS. The lamps on its California Route 1 and Select variants were deemed inadequate by the organization.

We have yet to see a localized release of the Ford Mach-E. Ford Philippines’ offering of SUVs include the Ecosport, Territory, Everest, Explorer, and Expedition.
