Honda to extend agreement with Red Bull Powertrains

Rumors of Porsche entering a partnership with Red Bull Racing have surfaced on the internet in the past few months. This is due to the intention expressed by Volkswagen Group’s CEO to give German car brands Audi and Porsche the green light to enter Formula 1.

This might not happen, at least until 2026, as Honda announced it has extended its power unit technical support agreement with Red Bull Powertrains until 2025.

“We thank Honda for their positive response to working together. We are excited to continue our partnership in F1 until the end of 2025 with the PU supplied by Honda. We have had a successful relationship so far, winning the Drivers’ championship in 2021 and currently leading the Drivers’ and Teams’ classifications, with the aim of securing both 2022 titles,” said Oracle Red Bull Racing Motorsport Advisor Dr. Helmut Marko.

Red Bull Powertrains CEO and Team Principal, Christian Horner added, “Red Bull’s partnership with Honda has been an incredibly successful one and we are pleased that this will continue until the end of the current era of the FIA’s power unit regulations in 2025.”

Honda officially ended its participation in Formula 1 at the end of 2021, with the resources allocated to PU development diverted to meet the company’s future carbon-neutral goals. The ongoing agreement between the two parties does not involve PU development, therefore HRC will be able to provide this service from within its current resources.

“We have agreed to continue supporting Red Bull Powertrains in Formula 1 through HRC, following Red Bull’s request to extend our current agreement, which HRC can meet within its existing resources. Once again, we aim to use our involvement in the pinnacle of motorsport for the development of technologies and of our workforce,” said Honda Racing Corporation President Koji Watanabe.

Red Bull has been doing significantly well in the Formula 1 season compared to its performance last year. The team has stayed on top of the rankings with Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz taking turns to challenge the Milton Keynes-based racing team.

Still in Formula 1, Vettel’s seat will be replaced next season by Alonso, as confirmed by the Aston Martin factory team. Reportedly, the seat left by the Spanish driver is to be filled in turn by Oscar Piastri, which the Aussie denies.
