Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) has premiered the brand's first high-performance all-electric model, the Ioniq  5 N.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Where was the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N unveiled?

The vehicle made its debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed.
  • What powers the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N?

The vehicle is equipped with two electric motors that can deliver as much as 641 horsepower.
  • According to HMC, the aforementioned vehicle (which was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed), represents the N-brand’s thrust towards electrification. In addition, the newly-launched electric vehicle (EV) also signifies the Korean automotive marque’s legacy of offering high-quality mobility alongside driver-focused N models.

It can be recalled that the N brand made its comeback to the World Rally Championship in 2014 and its numerous world championships infused Hyundai with a winning DNA — as reflected in the N high-performance models.

“Hyundai N spearheads the technological leadership of Hyundai Motor Company,” HMC President and Chief Executive Officer Jaehoon Chang was quoted as saying.

“N brand’s winning combination of technological know-how and motorsport experience is pushing the limits of vehicle performance, which has most recently resulted in Ioniq 5 N, a gamechanger for electric high performance. Key developments around this vehicle will further strengthen the competitiveness of all Hyundai models going forward. This is why the N brand exists.”

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N enjoins the electrified-global modular platform (E-GMP) with N’s motorsport-bred technologies and leverages N’s expertise from electrified “Rolling Labs” to maximize the EV’s high-performance capabilities and ensure it that is line with the N brand’s three performance pillars namely “Corner Rascal,” “Racetrack Capability” and “Everyday Sportscar.”

“Hyundai Ioniq 5 N was developed to take driving fun to a new level by utilizing the latest technologies available. Starting with Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, N brand aims to deliver N’s signature fun driving experience regardless of petrol, electric or hydrogen,” HMC Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport Till Wartenberg noted.

“To accomplish this, we’ve closely monitored the voices of our N fans in order to fine-tune our first all-electric N with the goal of electrifying the driving passion of our most demanding N-thusiasts,” the executive added.

    Powertrain

The newly-revealed vehicle is powered by two electric motors mated to an 84 kilowatt-hour battery. HMC said that the mill can dish out a maximum of 641 horsepower with the N Grin Boost engaged.

Providing a sense of control on the delivery of power as well as providing shift feel is the N e-shift system, which simulates the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) of internal combustion engine (ICE) N cars.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Hyundai Ioniq 5 N features a specially-tuned rack-mounted motor-driven power steering (R-MDPS) system with a higher steering ratio and enhanced torque feedback. Such a system results in a more direct experience that will give greater confidence to drivers.

Further, its N pedal intelligent software function guarantees instant turn-in behavior and enhanced throttle sensitivity. Drawing on similar technology used in i-Pedal’s regenerative braking system, N Pedal focuses on fast and exhilarating cornering.

Additionally, the vehicle also has an N Drift Optimizer that helps maintain the drift angle by balancing multiple vehicle controls responding to real-time inputs. Also, its integrated torque kick drift function allows the driver to simulate the clutch kick action of rear-wheel-driven internal-combustion-engine propelled models.

Moreover, the vehicle’s N torque distribution provides a fully variable front and rear torque distribution that can be adjusted to 11 levels. The e-LSD (electronic limited slip differential) at the rear axle optimizes cornering performance and control. Additional wheel sensors and broader damping capacity with increased damper size widens the performance range of the electronically controlled suspension.

Providing the model's stopping power are the N-tuned brakes that are made up of 400-millimeter (mm) front discs with four-piston monobloc calipers and 360mm rear discs.

Furthermore, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is also equipped with N Road Sense, which automatically recommends the activation of N Mode when double-curved road signs are detected.

Similar to the standard Ioniq 5, the N trim also has vehicle-to-load capabilities.

    Exterior

Since it is built as an “everyday sportscar”, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 comes with performance-enhancing design elements namely the wing-type rear spoiler, among others. Compared to the standard Ioniq 5, the N option is 20mm lower, 50mm wider, and 80mm longer.

In addition, the vehicle sits on 21-inch aluminum wheels that are fitted with 275/35R21 Pirelli P-Zero tires.

    Interior

Inside the cabin, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is supplied with N-brand elements found on the steering wheel, seats, door scuff panels, and pedals.

To make sure the vehicle is ready for everyday use, Hyundai placed a C-type USB port, a wireless charger and cupholders inside the vehicle.

Just like the standard Ioniq 5, the N trim is tailored with sustainable materials such as recyclable paperette door decorative garnish, Bio PET yarn from sugarcane, recycled PET yarn from recycled PET bottles, BIO TPO from sugarcane and eco processed leather.

Locally, Hyundai Motor Philippines is offering the standard Ioniq 5 in two options: the GLS S and the GLS L. They are offered in four body color options namely Phantom Black Pearl, Cyber Gray Metallic, Atlas White, and Gravity Gold Matte.
