LTO imposes hefty penalties for late vehicle registration transfers

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has imposed more stringent penalties against for late transfers of motor vehicle registrations.

Based on LTO Administrative Order No. AO-VDM-2024-046, the seller needs to report to the agency within five days the actual sale of the concerned vehicle — citing Republic Act 11235 (also known as the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act).

Meanwhile, the new vehicle owner must process the registration and transfer of ownership at the LTO within 20 working days from the actual turnover of the unit.

Those who would not comply with the aforementioned requirements will result to the imposition of alarm tags on the vehicles involved and the driver’s license of the seller or transferee.

In addition, sellers who will fail to report the sale of the vehicle on time shall face a P20,000-fine and another P20,000 for failure to transfer ownership.

Meanwhile, those who will fail to report and transfer ownership shall face a P40,000 fine.

Signed by LTO Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza, the AO-VDM-2024-046 — dated August 30, 2024 — is eyed to reduce the number of unregistered vehicles.
