The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has prepared contingency plans and alternative routes as it expects an influx of devotees for the Feast of the Black Nazarene, which will take place tomorrow.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will the Feast of the Black Nazarene take place?

The Feast of the Black Nazarene will happen tomorrow, January 9.
  • How many personnel will the MMDA deploy for tomorrow’s religious observance?

Per MMDA, it will deploy some 1,200 personnel for Traslacion.
  • Per the agency, it has placed plastic barriers as barricades to ensure orderliness of the queue and tents to serve as shade for the devotees. Emergency response is also on standby for those who will be needing immediate medical attention.

In addition, the MMDA deployed closed-circuit television monitors around the areas where the procession will pass to monitor traffic situations and ensure peace and order, in cooperation with the police.

A score of the organization’s personnel will also be tasked to help keep the vicinity clean during and after the religious feast.

The number coding scheme will be suspended in Manila City tomorrow as the observance of the feast has been declared a special non-working holiday.

“We have deployed 1,200 personnel for the procession alone, including those who are tasked to maintain the cleanliness of the road right after the procession passes through a certain route,” MMDA Chairman Attorney Don Artes said.

“We appeal to our kababayans not to throw trash which can cause injury or harm fellow devotees who will join the procession on Thursday especially since majority of them join the Traslacion barefooted,” he added.

For motorists that will be affected by the feast, here are the MMDA’s recommended alternate routes:

    Light vehicles

Light northbound vehicles (coming from Roxas Boulevard and Taft Avenue) are advised to take United Nations Avenue, straight to Nagtahan Otis, left at Mabini Bridge towards Magsaysay Boulevard and Lacson Avenue to their destination, and vice versa.

For light vehicles heading south (coming from Malabon-Navotas and Port area), they are advised to take Anda Circle then Soriano Avenue (Intramuros), Magallanes Drive towards Chinatown.

    Trucks

On the other hand, heavier vehicles such as trucks coming from the South Luzon Expressway are advised to head to Osmeña Hi-way then right turn to Quirino Avenue, straight to Nagtahan Street, going to Lacson Avenue, left turn to Yuseco Street, and straight ahead to Capulong Street right turn or turn left to R-10 road to their destination.

Meanwhile, trucks coming from Parañaque Area are advised to turn right at Quirino Avenue to Nagtahan then Lacson Avenue to reach their destination. The same route may be utilized by trucks going south.
