MMDA to soft launch handheld ticketing device usage in Jul.

Handheld devices

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is set to soft-launch the actual use of handheld ticketing devices next month, in line with the implementation of the single ticketing system (STS) in the National Capital Region.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will the soft launch for the usage of handheld ticketing devices start?

The soft launch for the devices' usage will either be in the first or second week of July.
  • What is the handheld device capable of doing?

The device can print citation tickets, validate and authenticate driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations, accept cashless payments of fines, check if the driver has incurred demerit points or if his/her license or the vehicle registration is suspended, canceled, or has an existing alarm, among others.
  • MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Romando Artes said that the initial batch of handheld ticketing devices have already been delivered and customized for use by five local government units (LGU) namely San Juan, Quezon City, Valenzuela, Parañaque, and Caloocan

“There will be a soft launch in the first or second week of July. We will also invite the supplier as we want to address the possible flaws or glitches in the implementation of the STS,” Artes said.

Further, Artes mentioned that the agency requested the supplier to equip the device with dual sim to avoid poor signal reception.

In addition, Artes noted that the agency will train its enforcers this month. "The training is scheduled on June 27. We want them to get familiar with the proper use of the handheld ticketing devices," Artes said.

Per MMDA, the STS enables interconnectivity among government agencies involved in traffic management through a single system of fines and penalties. It also aimed to help cut red tape, limit opportunities for corruption, and eradicate forms of negotiations between the motorist and the apprehending officer.
