Motul eyes exceeding UN climate control requirements, hints at developing EV-focused products in the pipeline

Motul, the French lubricant brand, stated that it aims to meet and exceed all the requirements set by the United Nations (UN) and the Paris Agreement treaty on climate change as a way to show the company’s leadership in the automotive lubricant industry.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the emission threshold based on the Paris Agreement treaty on climate change?

The emission threshold, per the Paris Agreement treaty on climate change, is 1.5 decrees Celsius.
  • What EV-focused products is Motul working on?

Motul said that the company is working on cooling products for EV.
  • Keith Shulz, Motul Asia Pacific’s Chief Sustainability and Industrial Officer, told Carmudi Philippines that the Aubervilliers-based firm will do everything to keep the amount of global emissions below the 1.5-degree Celcius (C) threshold.

“There are certain European Union (EU) requirements in place on our business units in Paris, and this is why we’re very conscious of what the requirements are, and taking these steps out of a voluntary basis to get out ahead of this 1.5 degrees C threshold, and to reduce our own impact as to show industry leadership,” Schulz said.

Schulz added that the evolution of Motul’s re-refined base oils and American Petroleum Institute (API)-approved competitive additive packages, are going to drive the company’s carbon-neutral position. Furthermore, Motul believes that using as much green energy as possible can make its operation more efficient.

Motul also acknowledged the inevitable transition of the global automotive industry to electric vehicles (EV). Schulz said that Motul is now researching EV-focused products.

“The amount of aftermarket consumption of fluids is designed to be minimized in future EVs. But the optimal operations are really dependent on cooling capabilities, and a lot of that is determined by the cooling system and the coolant itself. Our operations and research and development (R&D) facility in Japan is working with a range of automotive partners where a lot of the cutting-edge in battery and cooling is taking place today and we are side-by-side with them,” explained Shulz.

But despite the efforts Motul is putting into creating cooling products for EV models, the company will not abandon its products aimed at internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles.

“We are first and foremost an automotive aftermarket supplier of a full range of premium lubricants. And that’s our core business,” he stated.
