NLEX Corporation to conduct P282.5-M systems upgrade for toll, traffic management

A system upgrade worth P282 million for the electronic toll collection and traffic management systems in the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway is underway, the NLEX Corporation announced.

Aimed at enhancing the processing of toll plaza transactions and implementation of traffic regulations, the NLEX-SCTEX toll operator said that the upgrade shall cover the modernizing of servers and installation of new radio frequency identification (RFID) antennas and speed cameras.

Per NLEX Corporation, some 80 toll lanes at NLEX will be equipped with new antennas while four speed cameras will be installed in both Tarlac and Subic-bound portions of SCTEX.

“These enhancements are part of the company’s thrust in providing safer and more convenient journeys along with the drive for continuous innovation and customer service excellence,” NLEX Corporation President and General Manager Luigi Bautista was quoted as saying.

Over the past two years, NLEX Corporation made several enhancements and has equipped its facilities with new devices to improve the level of service.

In 2022, nearly 150 toll fare indicators, lane status indicators, traffic control gates, automatic vehicle classification devices, and loop detectors have been improved along the NLEX-SCTEX stretch — along with the software upgrade and system migration. In addition, the company upgraded the RFID system and network switches, realigned the RFID antennas, automatic license plate recognition (ALPR), and contactless card readers.

Relatedly, the toll operator reiterated that an 80 kilometers-per-hour (kph) limit is established for trucks and buses while cars and sport utility can go up to 100 kph along the toll roads. According to NLEX Corporation, its traffic officers use real-time data from the cameras to flag down those going beyond the maximum speed limits. Various servers at NLEX-SCTEX will also be upgraded for improved performance and reliability.
