Holy Guacamole, Batman! A Life-Size LEGO Batmobile Does Exist!
The Batmobile is just as iconic as the Caped Crusader that rides it. Without this vehicle, Batman would probably be just a weird guy traipsing on rooftops, wearing a black costume and mask. With Val Kilmer’s Batman declaring “Chicks dig the car” in Batman Forever, it only makes sense that in the upcoming Lego Batman Movie, the Dark Knight will prowl the streets with another unique version of his famed ride.
But more than the movie version, American car brand Chevrolet, after partnering with Detroit’s Cody Rouge Community, A World In Motion Program, FIRST LEGO League, and Warner Bros., has created a life-size LEGO Batmobile to help promote the LEGO-centric Batman flick, which is due to hit Philippine theaters this February 9, 2017.
Building the LEGO Batmobile
Spanning 17 feet long and almost 7 feet high, the LEGO Batmobile took a total of 222 hours to design and another 1,833 hours to build.
'To work on the LEGO Batmobile with Warner Bros. is an absolute thrill for us at Chevy,' said Paul Edwards, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. 'Many of the themes in 'The LEGO Batman Movie,' like imagination, family and community, align perfectly with our Chevy brand values and add to the value of the partnership.' The American automaker received some outside help from the LEGO Master Builder of Enfield, Connecticut and the children of Detroit’s Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance.
LEGO Batmobile Features
Chevrolet unveiled its plastic construction masterpiece at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Saturday, January 14. As you would expect, even with LEGO bricks, this version of the Batmobile comes fully loaded with really cool (albeit fictional) tech. According to the official website for the creation, it features, among other things, a “reality-defying 60.2L V100 engine,” automatic nerd alert, projectile-proof armored side panels, flaming rocket boosters, side Batwing conversion, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and driver-centric bulletproof glass (sorry, passengers!).
The exclusive stud shooters in particular (again, not real) Re designed to sow fear in the heart of any villain. Meanwhile, the Batsign hood ornament offers a nice classic touch to the whole package.
Pursuing a perp? No problem, as the LEGO Batmobile comes in three driving modes: Race Mode, Monster-Truck Mode, and the very necessary Parallel Park Mode for when the Caped Crusader needs to chase criminals on foot. “The LEGO Batmobile offers Parallel Park Mode, which provides lateral movement for easy parking by turning all four wheels a full 90 degrees,” the website describes. There’s also fully articulating wheels, whatever that means.
And in case Robin attempts to drive away with the vehicle, Batman can ensure the Boy Wonder is driving the car properly thanks to the onboard Teen Driver technology, which comes with safety features including one that mutes the music until Robin wears his seatbelt, as well as an in-vehicle report detailing how the teen performed on the road.
