Piaggio for sale in the Philippines
Piaggio is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer who produces scooter brands such as Piaggio, Vespa, Gilera and Derbi. Piaggio also creates compact commercial vehicles under its subsidiaries.
The Piaggio product line has been marketed in the Philippines for quite some time, however, corporate turmoil and several financial shortcomings significantly hindered its operation in the country. In 2012, the Italian motorcycle maker re-launched their presence in the country by tapping local partner Granstar Motors.
Rinaldo Piaggio founded the company in 1884. It started out as a developer of locomotives and railway carriages before shifting to producing aircraft when World War I broke out. Enrico Piaggio, who succeeded his father, steered the company into designing inexpensive vehicles for the masses.
In 1946, Piaggio produced its very first scooter the Vespa (Italian for “wasp”) and within a decade was able to create over a million units. The Vespa brand fueled Piaggio’s finances and in 1957, the company was able to produce tiny passenger cars such as Vespa 400.
Piaggio's slogan for the Vespa brand is “Chie Vespa mangia le mele” which can be translated to “An apple a day and all that.” While there are many translations for this phrase, it points to one thing- how Piaggio motorcycles have become a staple commodity for their customers.
Currently, Piaggio also markets its Aprilia brand- a marquee for producing race-winning sportbikes. The high performing Aprilia MANA 850 ABS, for example, has a V-twin engine that can produce 839cc and comes with a CVT transmission. This model is priced at P699,000.
The Italian motorcycle maker is selling four Piaggio scooters which are competitively priced against famous Japanese brands such as Honda and Yamaha. The sleek Piaggio Zip 100, which is priced at P79,000, can compete with the likes of the Honda Scoopy.
Commercial motorcycles, like the three-wheeled Piaggio Ape, are also offered as a multi-purpose vehicle for small businesses. Different body makes for the Ape includes a delivery van, a passenger vehicle and a pickup.
Granstar Motors and Industrial Corporation is the executive distributor of Piaggio products in the country.
