Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex brand of fuels and lubricants, held its annual Volunteer Week by providing sustainable assistance to local communities while promoting a more balanced lifestyle to the employee-volunteers through online workshops.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the Chevron Volunteer Week all about?

The annual series of events is designed to promote sustainable lifestyle to the employee volunteers while providing assistance to those who need it.
  • When did CPI started the Chevron Volunteer Week?

    The initiative started in 2009.
  • Chevron has been conducting Volunteer Week since 2009 where employees were given the opportunity to dedicate some of their time on activities that would help communities in need.

The 2021 edition of the Chevron Volunteer Week (which supports programs that promote livelihood, safety, health, education and the environment) was done in both virtual and real-world settings given the pandemic situation.

“During these trying times, it’s important for us to keep the essence of volunteerism alive. I’m glad that we are able to continue our Volunteer Week activities even virtually where Chevron employees are able to do their part in protecting the environment, supporting local farmers and businesses while helping as much as we can those who are badly in need,” CPI Country Chairman and General Manager Billy Liu was quoted as saying.

    Project Gulay

Chevron opened its 2021 Volunteer Week with Project Gulay wherein Chevron sourced vegetables from farmers in Pampanga and Nueva Ecija through partner St. Isidore the FARMer Learning Center Inc. and donated it to 80 families in Brgy. Pagibig sa Nayon in Quezon City while sharing food supplies.

Apart from the donation, Chevron volunteers attended a virtual cooking workshop hosted by Chef Joy Escobar, teaching them to prepare organic and healthy dishes.

According to CPI, the company’s Project Gulay goal was to raise awareness on the benefits of healthy eating while supporting and appreciating local farmers in the country.

CPI also conducted the Project Bokashi Compost, a program where attendees were taught the importance of food waste diversion and composting using Bokashi Technology. This event was facilitated by Karen Pascua, a certified Bokashi Compost Mentor and Edible Urban Gardener.

This event also yielded to the distribution of Bokashi Compost kits and grocery packs to 56 families in Tondo, Manila through St. John Bosco Parish and Bureau of Plant Industry’s Gulayan ni Juan.

    Chevron Volunteer Week

Further, CPI had its Batangas Coastal clean-up drive — a staple event for the company— that is being conducted every September in time for the International Coastal Clean-up month.

For 2021, 64 volunteers rid the two-kilometer coastline in San Pascual of garbage and other debris that prevents sea turtles from laying eggs on the beach. About 210 bags of non-biodegradable trash and 100 bags of biodegradable waste with a total gross weight of 755 pounds were collected by the volunteers.

    Project Joy

Culminating the set of activities for the volunteerism for last year was Project Joy, led by a certified KonMari consultant, Renalyn Tan Castillejos.

Chevron volunteers learned the Konmari method by letting go of the things that do not spark joy anymore but can still be beneficial to those who are in need.

The activity was in partnership with Project Pearls, a non-stock, nonprofit and non-partisan organization whose mission is to help the poorest children and families have a better life through education, literacy, nutrition, healthcare, empowerment and livelihood. All decluttered materials from the volunteers were donated to the beneficiaries in Brgy. Malainen Bago, Naic Cavite, a relocation site for families from Tondo, Manila.
