The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has set new guidelines for the controversial Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) Busway.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What vehicles are allowed to use the EDSA Busway?

    According to DOTr, vehicles allowed to use the EDSA Busway include LTFRB-authorized vehicles, ambulances, firetrucks, PNP vehicles, and service vehicles performing works for the EDSA Busway project.
  • Which officials are allowed to use the EDSA Busway lane?

    Officials allowed to use the EDSA Busway lane are the President of the Philippines, the Vice President of the Philippines, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court Chief Justice.
  • According to the country’s transportation bureau, the EDSA Busway lane is only available for the following vehicles:

    • Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board--authorized buses, including bases with special permits and/or franchises to operate on the EDSA Busway route;
    • On-duty ambulances, firetrucks, and Philippine National Police vehicles; and
    • Service vehicles performing their duties for the EDSA Busway Project, including but not limited to construction, security, janitorial, and maintenance services within the EDSA Busway.

    Per DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, the officials allowed to use EDSA Busway are the President of the Philippines, the Vice President of the Philippines, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court Chief Justice.

    Bautista also lauded the Metro Manila Development Authority for enforcing the rules being set out by the DOTr to move more commuters and ensure mobility along the country’s busiest thoroughfare.

    “Considering that the EDSA Busway is operating under a limited capacity, the Department believes that imposing stiffer penalties would restrict its use to authorized buses and therefore enhance its mobility and serviceability,” Bautista said in his letter to MMDA Chairman Romando Artes.
