The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are teaming up to deploy electric vehicles (EV) and construct EV charging infrastructures in five major cities in the Philippines, namely Baguio City, Davao City, General Santos, Clark Freeport, and Subic Freeport.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the five cities that will form part of DTI and UNIDO's project?

The five major cities that supported the initiative are Baguio City, Davao City, General Santos, Clark Freeport, and Subic Freeport.
  • What program will the DTI establish to help push the country's EV industry?

Per PNA, DTI will establish the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy — a program similar to the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) Program.
  • According to a report from the Philippine News Agency (PNA), the project is said to run from 2022 to 2027.

Per PNA, DTI Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba said during the SyCip Gorres Velayo & Co. (SGV) tax symposium in Makati City that the mayors of the aforementioned cities have already signified their commitment to be their partners in implementing the said project.

In addition to bringing into service EV and building related infrastructures, Aldaba reportedly mentioned that the initiative will also help both national and local government units create the necessary e-vehicle policy environment and ecosystem for them.

The DTI undersecretary also said that the government is hopeful that the recent enactment of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) into law will help stimulate the growth of the local EV industry.

Aldaba reportedly stated that the DTI, through EVIDA, will establish the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy — a program similar to the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) Program.

DTI, Aldaba explained, is really serious in terms of building the EV industry in the country. She added the DTI looks to replicate or exceed the gains in investments, jobs, and industry development under the CARS Program for the e-vehicle industry.
