Yesterday, Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) shared a list of 2022’s best — and worst — commercial vans in Europe. The vehicles were selected by evaluating their respective crash avoidance system fitments and performance.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is 2022's safest commercial van according to the Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)?

Per Euro NCAP, this year's safest commercial van is the Fiat Ducato.
  • What is the worst commercial van according to Euro NCAP?

Per Euro NCAP, this year's worst commercial van is the Nissan Interstar.
  • Euro NCAP tested 19 commercial vans using a comprehensive criteria which included car-to-car, pedestrian, and cyclist auto brake system; lane support; speed assist; and driver attention assistance and seat belt reminder systems.

The vans were rated depending on their overall score. Those that achieved 80 percent or more were given the “Platinum” rating, “Gold” for vans that scored 60 percent or more, “Silver” for commercial vans with an overall score of 40 percent or higher, “Bronze” for those that got a 20 percent score or higher, and “Not Recommended” for those that scored below 20 percent.

Below is the list of 19 commercial vans and their respective scores:

    Fiat Ducato – 88 Percent
    Ford Transit – 68 Percent
    Volkswagen Transporter – 65 Percent
Ford Transit Custom – 63 Percent
    Mercedes-Benz Vito – 61 Percent
    Mercedes-Benz Sprinter – 52 Percent
    Nissan Primastar – 45 Percent
    Renault Traffic – 45 Percent
    Peugeot Expert – 44 Percent
    Volkswagen Crafter – 44 Percent
    Opel Vivaro – 42 Percent
    Iveco Daily – 41 Percent
Citroen Jumpy (Dispatch) – 37 Percent
    Toyota Proace – 37 Percent
    Opel Movano – 33 Percent
    Peugeot Boxer – 33 Percent
Citroen Jumpy (Relay) – 32 Percent
    Renault Master – 23 Percent
    Nissan Interstar – 18 Percent

Based on the 2022 list, only one commercial van was rated “Not Recommended” compared to last year’s five. This shows that European commercial vans are steadily improving and that manufacturers have made more substantial updates to their vehicles.

“We are seeing promising signs that commercial vans are being upgraded with more advanced safety systems, closing the gap between passenger car and commercial vehicle segment. In general, it looks as though manufacturers are starting to take the safety in this segment more seriously and, while there is a way to go, we are inspired by the improvements — some modest, some impressive — that we have seen in the last year,” said Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen.

Bothered by the poor level of fitment of safety equipment in commercial vans, Euro NCAP drew attention to the safety standards in these vehicles. Commercial vans are the workhorse of choice for couriers and small businesses. These vehicles spend a lot of time on the road and without proper safey equipment, coupled with their size and mass, they represent a significant hazard to smaller vehicles and vulnerable road users if they are involved in a collision.

The organization hopes to see new legislation in Europe force van manufacturers to fit basic avoidance systems, already widely available on passenger cars, in a few years’ time. As of the moment, Euro NCAP’s commercial van ratings aim to encourage manufacturers to fit more advanced systems more quickly.
