The Diesel-Powered All-New Honda CR-Vs Are Here

Honda CR-V

Two weeks after we first reported the arrival of the diesel-powered, all-new Honda CR-V, Honda Cars Philippines (HCPI), Honda’s automobile business unit in the Philippines, has officially launched its newest compact crossover locally--and it's not offering the oil-burning powerplant in just one variant but in three of the four variants available locally.

Honda CR-V

The Engines

Honda's diesel mill is a 1.6-liter DOHC i-DTEC Diesel TURBO engine developed under Honda's Earth Dreams Technology that puts out 118 hp and 300Nm of torque through a new Nine-Speed Automatic Transmission with Electronic Gear Selector and Paddle Shifters that "produces a powerful yet cleaner and more efficient output." What makes the slushbox of the diesel CR-V stand out is that the traditional Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive functions are operated via buttons instead of through a traditional transmission lever. The diesel-powered variants of the Honda CR-V are the V Diesel, the S Diesel, and the SX Diesel AWD--all of which can accommodate seven occupants.

As for the lone gasoline-fed CR-V, it's the 2.0-liter SOHC i-VTEC engine from the previous-generation model that's now mated to a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) also developed under Honda's Earth Dreams Technology "for better fuel efficiency" and is good for 152 hp and 189 Nm of torque. The 2.0-liter CR-V S variant is also the only model in the lineup that's a five-seater.

The Exterior

HCPI describes the exterior aesthetics of the all-new Honda CR-V as "dynamic and aggressive," with its chrome grille flanked by Honda's signature Full LED headlights, with the new High Beam Support System that automatically changes the headlight from low to high beam in dark driving conditions available for the SX Diesel AWD. Helping to enhance the CR-V's aggressive stance are its wide, muscular fenders while the chrome tailgate, spoiler, and LED Daytime Running Lights give it a modern and dynamic stance.

The all-new CR-V rides on front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspensions, and has wider front and rear tracks compared to the outgoing model. Ground clearance for the CR-V is at 198 mm save for the SX Diesel AWD which is at 208 mm. Complementing the SX Diesel AWD's taller ground clearance is its enhanced Real Time All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system that distributes the power and torque to all four wheels, "allowing the driver to have maximum traction and stability on any road condition."

The Interior

For the interior, all four variants of the CR-V come with black leather seats, including the third-row seats for the V Diesel, the S Diesel, and the SX Diesel AWD. All four variants also come with a Full-Color Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Instrument Cluster. The second-row seats for the seven-seater diesel variants feature a 60:40-Split Rear Seat that also slides and recline to allow access to the third-row seats while the third row has a 50:50-Split Reclining Seats. Additional air conditioning vents are available for the second- and third-row occupants while the two USB charging ports at the back of the center console give the CR-V a total of four, and that's not to mention the two available 12V sockets "for added comfort and convenience."

Both the second and third row seats of the seven-seater CR-V also have fold-flat functions--with the second row even capable of tumbling forward--to give the vehicle a cargo-carrying capacity of 472 liters with the third-row seats folded down and 967 liters with both the second and third row seats folded flat. As for the five-seater CR-V, cargo capacity behind the rear seats is at 522 liters.

To keep the CR-V's occupants entertained, specifically in the SX Diesel, S Diesel, and 2.0-liter S CVT variants, a seven-inch Touch Screen Display Audio system offers both multimedia and hands-free telephone functionality while also functioning as a Multi-View Reverse Camera Display with Dynamic Guidelines. Furthermore, the SX Diesel and S Diesel variants' infotainment system also comes with a Navigation Feature and additional controls for its Intelligent-Dual Zone Automatic air-conditioning system.

As the range-topping variant, the SX Diesel AWD also comes with other exclusive features such as the Panoramic Sunroof, Power Tailgate with adjustable height, Auto Rain Sensing Wipers, and Electronic Eight-Way Power Adjustment Driver's Seat with Four-Way Power Lumbar Support. More important though are its safety features, specifically the Honda Sensing Technology which is a suite of safety and driver assistive technologies like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Low Speed Follow (LSF), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

As standard, the CR-V already comes with Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold, Agile Handling Assist (AHA), Driver Attention Monitor, Driver and Passenger Airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), Multi-View Reverse Camera with Dynamic Guidelines, Low Tire Pressure Warning System, LaneWatch Camera, Side Airbags, Side Curtain Airbags, and Walk Away Auto Lock feature.
