Toyota equips US-spec 2023 Highlander with new turbocharged engine

Toyota is giving the US-spec 2023 Highlander several updates, providing those shopping for a midsize crossover SUV a few more reasons to consider Toyota’s new turbocharged option.

That’s right, the 2023 Toyota Highlander now receives a new, high-torque, high-efficiency, turbocharged engine. The 2.4-liter gasoline powerplant endows the Highlander with 265 horses with over 400Nm of torque.

With this smaller turbocharged engine, owners benefit not only from better mileage but also from a significant increase in torque — from 356Nm with the old 3.5-liter V6 to 418Nm with the new 2.4-liter mill. According to Toyota, the increase in torque will allow the driver to “feel this gain in everyday driving situations, especially when taking advantage of the Highlander’s seven- or eight-person seating and generous cargo capacity.”

The new turbocharged engine is complemented by two all-wheel-drive systems. The optional all-wheel-drive system on L, LE, and XLE models can send up to 50 percent of the Highlander’s available torque to the rear wheels to help counter wheel slip when necessary. Meanwhile, higher variants like the XSE, Limited, and Platinum benefit from a more advanced Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Drive Mode Select and Driveline Disconnect.

In addition, Toyota also gave the 2023 Highlander new dual 12.3-inch screens. Available in Limited and Platinum trim levels, the two large multi-information display panels feature glare-reducing optically bonded screens. In addition to the new infotainment system, the aforementioned variants of the 2023 Highlander will come with the JBL Premium Audio System with 11 speakers, a carryover from the 2022 model year units.

Other notable features found on the US-spec 2023 Toyota Highlander include power-folding mirrors, a hands-free power liftgate, and improved wireless charging.
