In the recently held Magkaisa summit, a transport and commuter conference, 24 transport groups called for incoming Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to help improve the public commuter experience by using available technologies.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

There were 24 transport groups in the Magkaisa summit.
  • What were the proposed actions put forward by the group?

Some of the proposals were to explore a Smart City, various concepts of sustainable mobility, and the construction of commuter-friendly terminals.
  • The group proposed the use of Smart City and Sustainable Mobility concepts that support ride-hailing services, the building of more bike lanes, the use of technology-driven traffic monitoring and enforcement, and the construction of more commuter-friendly terminals for senior citizens, children, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.

The proposal was put forward by representatives of public utility vehicles (PUVs), bus drivers, operators, and commuter groups through a signed “Manifesto of Solidarity and Action Plan.”

According to the Pilipino Society and Development Advocates Incorporated (PASADA CC), a non-governmental organization pursuing the welfare of commuters and transport workers, the incoming Marcos administration must lead in constructing more pay-parking buildings, supporting ride-hailing services, providing safe pedestrian crossings, intersections and footways, improving regulations for two-wheel motorists, and encouraging local government units (LGU) to implement No Contact Apprehension Programs (NCAP) to once and for all eradicate “kotong” and instill motorist discipline.

Among those who supported the Manifesto included FEJODAP, the National Public Transport Coalition led by transport advocate Ariel Lim, and a score of 5,000 commuters and transport workers.
