BUYER'S GUIDE: 2018 SsangYong Tivoli

BUYER'S GUIDE: 2018 SsangYong Tivoli

Tivoli spelled backwards reads 'I Lov It,' and this has been the catchphrase of SsangYong's flagship SUV since its release. Like its fellow Korean car makes Kia and Hyundai, SsangYong started out as a manufacturer of really cheap and unreliable cars, but has vastly improved the quality of its offerings ever since. And nowhere is that evolution more evident than in the Tivoli. So is the 2018 SsangYong Tivoli worth a look? Check out the Buyer's Guide below.

Specification

The 2018 Tivoli comes in three different variants, all equipped with a six-speed automatic gearbox with Smart Driving Mode. All the variants house a 1.6-liter in-line, four-cylinder DOHC engine with Dual Variable Valve Timing. The engine's max output is 126 hp, and max torque is 160 Nm. Minimum ground clearance is 167 mm, and minimum curb weight is 1,300 kg.

Exterior

The 'SUV' tag is kind of a head-scratcher, because with its overall dimension of 4,195mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,590mm tall, the Tivoli looks more suited as a crossover. Car enthusiasts will easily notice its Land Rover-like proportions, and that association guarantees that the Tivoli will attract plenty of admiring glances. Headlamps are halogen, and SsangYong adds in daytime running lamps to raise the SUV’s style and function. Paint options include Silent Silver, Techno Grey, Space Black, Grand White, Orange Pop, and Dandy Blue. A black or white roof option adds to the Tivoli’s appeal.

Interior

The interior is not as eye-catching as the exterior, but spaciousness and lots of standard equipment make up for any design shortcomings. That said, the layout is ergonomic and smart, with SsangYong taking plenty of cues from its fellow Korean car brands. The references are apparent in the highly visible and easy-to-reach controls and impeccable build quality. There’s auto seat adjustment and ventilated front seat across the range, making the Tivoli one of the more comfortable options for drivers frequently faced with long commutes. Other features to enjoy include Automatic Dual Zone Climate Control, Auto Dimming Rearview Mirror, and seven-inch LCD Touchscreen with MP3, Bluetooth, USB, and Auxiliary connectivity.

Space

Ample space abounds in the Tivoli for every passenger. Rear passengers will find the leg room in that part of the cabin more than adequate. That said, the generous space in the boot is one that SsangYong is especially proud of--the car maker claims that the Tivoli will fit three full-sized golf bags. In case that much storage capacity is still lacking, simply folding the rear seats and removing the false floor will expand the space capacity immensely.

Safety

The 2018 Tivoli is pretty basic in terms of safety, but for the price range, it's hard to fault Ssangyong's choices in this area. There's airbags for driver and front passenger, Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist, Engine Immobilizer, and 3-pt. seatbelts for all. Other standard safety features include Smart Keyless Entry System, Burglar Alarm, Rearview Camera and Rear Parking Sensors.

Our Verdict

With a price tag ranging from PHP1,040,000 to PHP1,160,000, the 2018 SsangYong Tivoli's contemporary styling, spacious cabin, and enviable features are sure to curry favor with many budget-conscious SUV buyers. For the price, the Tivoli offers tremendous value.
