Major Road Repair and Reblocking on EDSA, C-5, Katipunan Resume Today

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has resumed its road and reblocking repairs on segments of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), Circumferential Road 5 (C-5), and Katipunan Avenue, starting 11 PM, Friday, March 29, 2019. It will continue until 5 AM, Monday, April 1, 2019.

According to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) National Capital Region (NCR) Director Ador G. Canlas, these are the following road sections that will be repaired on EDSA:

• Southbound direction from Ermin Garcia to New York in Quezon City, 1st lane from the sidewalk; and
• Northbound direction from 50 meters after Magallanes MRT to KM 29 in Makati City, outer lane.

C-5 Roads covering the southbound direction in front of Tiendisitas to SM Center in Pasig City together with northbound direction fronting SM Aura to Market Market will be repaired.

Other roads scheduled for reblocking activities is Katipunan heading southbound from after C.P. Garcia and J.Escaler, truck lane.

Road Problem: A Longstanding Problem

According to the Oxford Business Group, the country's transport system was its worst-ranked category. Infrastructure was at its worst mark, scoring 3.4 out of 7, way below the 4.4 gross composite index for the country. Quality of roads was also below average, with a mark of 3.3 out of 7, placing the Philippines 97th country with the worst road quality out of 140 countries.

The government plans to improve these marks through the help of international donor agencies like ADB and World Bank. Another program is the National Roads Improvement and Management Program funded by World Bank in collaboration with the DPWH. Now in its second phase, the USD501.68-million project is set to "improve the efficiency and operational capacity of the national road system."
