Ten ideas to help you come up with a unique car name

Filipinos are fond of naming things so who could resist giving their car its very own name. Whatever car model you own, chances are you have already given it a unique name either just for kicks or because of your attachment to it. And in some instances, your friends may even mistake your car for your girlfriend when you mention 'her' during your conversations. On October 2, the United States celebrates what it calls the "Name Your Car Day". To help our readers who have recently bought a car, we have come up with ten useful ideas to help you decide on a unique car name to envy. Be warned, however; these ideas are pure awesomeness.

Name it after a Transformer

The hit cartoon of the 80’s has popularized how we view cars today- a transforming robot (at least in the cinematic sense). So, if you own a Chevrolet Camaro, why not name it “Bumble Bee” which is what he converted into in the movie franchise's fourth installment- Age of Extinction. To start, found out if your car model was used in the cartoon or movie, name it, and wait for it to transform.

Branding the brand

Some car owners are devoted to just a few car brands. As such, you could simply expect them to name their car after the brand like “Lexy” for a Lexus or “Volks” for a Volkswagen. If you want to find out some of the rides that have these names, simply take a drive to your local car club.

Modify the car’s model name

Most car manufacturers have already given their fleets some unique names and what better way to name your car then to simply modify an already existing one. For example, a Mitsubishi Lancer can be named “Lance” and a Hyundai Grace can be called “Grace”.

Base it on the color

We are all drawn to a certain colour, so why not name your car after your favorite one. Some of the name derivatives are “Silvy” for a silver colored car, or “Rogue” for a red colored vehicle. Some owners take it to the next level by naming them in foreign languages such as “Ciel Bleu”, which is French for blue sky.

Attributes that stands out

Some car owners christen their cars based on an attribute that stands out in the vehicle. These names include “Bruiser” for a car that usually crashes or “Blitz” for a fast accelerating model. It could also be “Clunky” if it makes a lot noise.

The one that got away

Let’s face it; some of us have not moved on from our exes. Such deep emotional turmoil can be relieved by next best thing in your life- your car. With this frame of thought, it is easy to name it after one of your former sweethearts. However, this only works for singles. (Cue Katy Perry’s song on the car radio…)

Out of this world name

When an overly enthusiastic car owner gets his brain working, names like “The Monster” for a subcompact Suzuki Alto may suddenly pop up. And what about naming your Isuzu D-Max “Boy Pickup”-for obvious reasons. However, who could blame Scooby Doo and the Gang when they named their van the “Mystery Machine”.

Formulate from baby names

Some sites encourage car owners to name their cars using the baby name formula. Simply ask the following questions: what year was your car made, what gender is your car (based on the model name), and your car’s age. Then look up the popular baby names of for that year. For instance, a 2009 Nissan Altima is a girl named “Garbriella”.

Name it after an event

(Feature Image) How to prepare an emergency car kit Let’s say you got your car at a time when there was a big event, such as a strong typhoon or something personal. Naming your car after the event could serve as a marker. Let’s say you finally get tired of riding the MRT (because it always breaks down) and to celebrate, you name your ride “Tirik”. No pun intended, folks.

Use Filipino words

Showing your deep Filipino roots can extend to the simple act of naming your car. Some ideas to play around with in the vernacular are: if your car is a sprinter sedan what about “Maliksi” or if it’s a trusty pickup or commercial vehicle name it “Kasanga”.
