US-market Toyota Grand Highlander breaks cover, to be offered in 3 powertrain options

The United States (US) arm of Toyota has dropped the drapes off the 2024 Grand Highlander sport utility vehicle (SUV) at the ongoing 2023 Chicago Auto Show.

According to the carmaker, it will be offered in three powertrain options: a well-balanced 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline-fed engine, a fuel-efficient 2.5-liter hybrid, and a performance-oriented Hybrid Max powerplant that puts out as much as 362 horsepower.

The aforementioned powertrains will also come in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. The former gets three drive modes: Sport, Eco, and Normal. The latter, on the other hand, gets an additional Multi-Terrain select, which adds Mud and Sand, Rock and Dirt, and Snow modes.

“There is definitely a need in the market for a midsize SUV that prioritizes interior comfort in all three rows and Grand Highlander is the ultimate option. This three-row model takes the Highlander legacy to an entirely new space while also keeping on our promise to deliver on electrification. Highlander was the first model in its segment to offer a hybrid powertrain back in 2006 and Grand Highlander further expands on our electrification leadership,” said Toyota Marketing Group Vice President Lisa Materazzo.

Design-wise, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander features a face akin to Toyota’s SUV and multi-purpose vehicles in the Philippines, like the Raize, the Veloz, and the Avanza.

At its fore is a formidable trapezoidal, hammerhead front grille flanked by headlamps, daytime running lights, and fog lamps. On its side are black wheel arches, black B- and C-pillars, side mirrors with turn signals, and wheels that go as big as 20 inches. The rear of the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander boasts similarly imposing features with sleek-looking taillamps, a roof-integrated spoiler with a third brake light, and dual exhausts.

Touted as an SUV with adult-friendly third-row seats, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander features a generously-sized cabin. Inside are leather seats, a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, a seven-inch instrument panel, and a standard 12.3-inch infotainment display.

Other creature comfort features include a wireless charger, USB ports for charging, various bottle and cup holders, and several pockets. It can also be had with a panoramic sunroof, captain seats, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch premium multimedia display with an 11-speaker audio system from JBL Audio.

To prove just how much of a family SUV the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is, the automotive brand has teamed up with Nintendo of America to build a custom SUV. Further, 500 customers of the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander will get a Nintendo Switch OLED console from Toyota, which comes with a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game.

Information about the vehicle’s pricing and on-sale date is expected to be announced in the coming summertime in the US (from June to September).
