Bentley just hit a huge milestone with the Flying Spur, which it lovingly dubs as “the ultimate grand touring luxury sedan.” The upscale British marque has announced the completion of Bentley Flying Spur number 40,000 at the end of August at its manufacturing facility in Crewe.

Originally known as the Continental Flying Spur, the luxury saloon has evolved significantly to further distinguish itself from the Continental GT. With each iteration, the model has consistently delivered a “perfect fusion of performance-orientated agility and exclusive four-door, limousine-style comfort,” according to its maker.

A total of 250 Bentley engineers, designers, and craftspeople work on each Flying Spur model, handcrafting and shaping every single component through 100 hours of ensured perfection. Half of the 40,000 units sold are bespoke, commissioned by customers from all over. After a barrage of quality checks, the finished unit is then shipped to its discerning owner in one of the 68 different countries Bentley operates, including North America, China, and countries across Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East.

The latest version of the Flying Spurwas launched middle of 2019. Sharing a platform with the Porsche Panamera and Bentley's own Continental GT, the luxury saloon has a rear-wheel bias added to its all-wheel drive system, which helps push the car to a top speed of 333kmph.

Despite the speed boost, the 2020 Flying Spur still uses the same 6.0-liter W12 engine under the hood, putting out the same 626hp as the top-level trim of the car's second generation. Torque on the other hand, is boosted significantly from 820 to 900 Nm.

Built on Bentley’s new platform, the new Flying Spur adds 5.1 inches to the wheelbase, which benefits the vehicle's handling as well as the comfort of rear passengers. Other undercarriage-related adjustments include a more forward front axle, an adjustable air suspension, brake-based torque vectoring, variable dampers, and Bentley's first Electronic All-Wheel Steering system configured with Active All-Wheel Drive and Bentley Dynamic Ride.

Exterior-wise, the third-generation Flying Spur exudes Bentley's latest sculptural design philosophy starting with the cut-crystal effect of its LED matrix headlamps with chrome sleeve accents, to the elegant yet muscular side creases, and on to the new wrap-around rear lamps with 'B' motifs. A new batch of 22-inch alloys further display the car's unique personality and performance.

The car also features a look-back at its rich heritage with the vertical vanes in the grille. Sitting just right in front of a gloss black matrix mesh, the vanes are inspired by the 1957 Bentley S1 Continental Flying Spur.

12.3-inch screen handles more than the car's infotainment needs, controlling other features such as the proximity sensor that automatically activates the system for commands as your hand draws near. Fluted leather upholstery comes standard, as does color-matched Alcantara blinds, seven-color mood lighting, inductive 'wireless' charging, and two USB sockets for mobile phones.

The Bentley Flying Spur is available locally. Price is made available upon request.
