It was no surprise to see a slew of new-energy vehicles at MIAS 2026. With the rising fuel prices, many car buyers are drawn to the promised benefits of using electrified mobility, such as hybrid cars and fully electric ones.

Leading the charge were BYD’s Atto 2 and Sealion 7. The two models were the first to be previewed at the show and showcased what adopters can expect from the booming electric crossover segment.

Notably, the BYD Atto 2 is a front-wheel drive electric vehicle (EV) with up to 172.3 horsepower (hp) and 290 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque; while the Sealion 7 uses a four-wheel drive setup with 523 hp and 690 Nm of pulling power.

Depending on what one’s motoring needs are, these two can accommodate almost any car buyer’s requirements.

BYD’s premium EV arm, Denza, also came with models to preview — specifically the B5, B8, and Z9 GT.

The Denza B5 and B8 are hybrid sport utility vehicles (SUV) with a penchant for going off the beaten path. The former uses a combination of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors for 677 hp and 760 Nm. Meanwhile, the latter packs a larger 2.0-liter gasoline mill with a dual-electric motor setup, which does about 603 horses and 760 Nm of pulling power.

As for the Denza Z9 GT, the nameplate is touted as a luxury shooting brake and uses a hybrid setup with some 858 hp.

Following the related brands was Kia, which officially launched the EV5.

The EV SUV is fitted with a single electric motor with a high-capacity battery to dish out 215 hp and 310 Nm. When it comes to range, the nameplate offers approximately 550 kilometers (km), which is good not only for city driving, but also for spontaneous weekend escapades.

Great Wall Motor (GWM) Philippines followed through with a presentation highlighting three promising NEVs.

First was the GWM Ora 5, which is a subcompact all-electric hatchback. The previewed model is equipped with an emissions-free powertrain, which will likely appeal to more Filipino car buyers, given the current trend in which some car buyers consider electrified vehicles a more practical alternative, given the erratic fuel price hikes.

Globally, it is propelled by an electric motor with 201 hp and 260 Nm.

Alongside the GWM Ora 5 were the Haval H7, and Tank 700 Hi-4Z. These two models are hybrid SUVs touted as capable machines, with the former’s global version packing a 1.5-liter gasoline-fed hybrid mill with 240 hp and 530 Nm.

On the other hand, the latter’s global version is specified with a 3.0-liter V6 engine combined with electric motors. Performance-wise, the seven-seater SUV can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in five seconds and has an approximate all-electric range of 100 km.

MG also had an NEV on its booth in the form of the upcoming G50 PHEV. On the carmaker’s Philippine website, the model is said to use a plug-in hybrid powertrain (likely with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine) with a 95 km all-electric range.

Not to be outdone, GAC Motor Philippines showcased the GS8 and GN8 hybrid vehicles.

The GAC GS8 HEV is a large full-size SUV powered by the new 2.0-liter turbocharged Mega Wave powertrain with 188 hp and 320 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the GN8 PHEV takes on the conventional multi-purpose vehicle body with a hybrid system that makes 240 hp and a combined range of 1,038 km.

Following the above brands is Geely Motor Philippines, with a preview of the EX2 all-electric hatchback.

While not much was discussed, the Department of Energy shared that the Philippine market model will pack a rear-wheel drive system with 113 hp and 150 Nm, as well as an estimated range of 325 km.

On display, too, was the recently released Geely EX5 EM-i

Jetour brought in its Gaia premium sub-brand as well as introduced the G700 PHEV at MIAS 2026.

The Jetour G700 PHEV is powered by a V12 Performance 2.0TD i-DMO (Intelligent Dual Motor Off-road) engine with a plug-in system. It puts out 892 hp and 1,135 Nm.

Proving that good things come to those who wait was the Chinese brand Jaecoo. It presented the all-new J5 SHS-S with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline hybrid system that delivers 342 hp and 525 Nm of torque.

When it comes to range, the vehicle offers under 1,000 km of driving.

Deepal, too, worked to make an impression among visitors with the S05 BEV and range-extended electric vehicle (REEV), as well as the G318 REEV.

    ICEs of MIAS 2026

While the majority of the launched and previewed models at MIAS 2026 consisted of those with new-energy powertrains, some powered by fully internal combustion engines (ICE) held the fort for enthusiasts.

These include the likes of the MG5 Sedan that uses a 1.5-liter engine tuned to generate 108 hp and 142 Nm.

Also offering new ICE crossovers was Changan Philippines, which presented the new CS35 Max. It is propelled by a 1.5-liter BlueCore gasoline mill that can now produce up to 180 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
