Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP) claimed that its sales grew by more than three times in the first half of 2021 from the same period last year.

According to the Geely distributor in the country, sales for the whole six months this year reached 2,426 units — which is a 342-percent jump compared to the 2020 figures, enabling the company to take ninth position in total industry sales

The said number has made Geely the only Chinese vehicle manufacturer to join the Top 10 automotive distributors locally.

SGAP President and Chief Executive Officer Yosuke Nishi noted that such sales strength was exercised despite the challenges that the industry experienced during the January to June period.

“This year has its own challenges. Just as the industry was starting to recover from the pandemic, safeguard duty was imposed on imported vehicles and the re-implementation of stricter quarantine restrictions in the second quarter. We had to be flexible with our strategies to keep up with the volatile situation,” Nishi explained.

Based on SGAP numbers, the Coolray led the strong sales performance — besting its competitors in the subcompact 4x2 SUV segment — after selling 1,312 units. This translates to 153-percent rise in comparison to 2020’s 518 units rolled out from showrooms.

Relatedly, the company has been concentrating on further growing the sales of its existing models: Coolray, Azkarra, and Okavango as well rapidly expanding its dealer network.

“It is important to us that we are able to reach our growing number of customers especially now that more people are beginning to notice Geely all over the country,” Nishi added.

Late last year, Geely Automobile International Corporation Deputy General Manager Jenny Jin revealed plans to bring in a new model, announcing that the upcoming unit would be a sedan. It was supposed to come out in April.
