10 Bestselling Cars of 2016: Toyota Secures Top 6 Spots, 7 Cars in the Top 10

As if having the top three bestselling cars in 2015 was not enough, Toyota went and occupied the top six spots in the Philippines’ list of 10 bestselling cars of 2016. The perennial bestseller Toyota Vios claims first place, followed by the Toyota Fortuner, Toyota HiAce, Toyota Wigo, Toyota Innova, and Toyota Avanza. The Vios, which has been the country’s number one seller since 2008, sold 36,256 units in the past year, and retains its title as the bestselling car in the Philippines for nine years running.

The rest of the top 10

The Toyota Fortuner takes the second spot with 28,549 units sold. These numbers make the Fortuner the number pickup platform vehicle in the Philippines. Third spot goes to its van brethren, the Toyota HiAce, which sold 19,913 units.

The fight for the fourth position was close, but since Toyota marques were the only ones vying for the spot, the result matters less for those concerned about brand sales numbers. That said, Toyota’s mini hatchback offering, the Wigo, barely edges out its bigger cousin the Innova, selling 18,430 units to the Innova’s 18,137.

At sixth place is the Toyota Avanza with 13,466 units sold. However, it’s not the last Toyota car in the top ten. That prestige goes to the Toyota Hilux, which managed to shift 12,405 units and claim the ninth spot.

The Mitsubishi Mirage G4 (12,880 units sold, seventh place), Ford Everest (12,453 units sold, eight place), and the Hyundai Accent (12,360 units sold, tenth place) round off the country’s top ten sellers for 2016.

A marked increase

Five of the top ten saw significant improvements in their sales numbers. The Toyota Vios’s sales figures for 2016 reflected an 8.5 increase over 2015’s numbers. Also up is the Toyota HiAce, which saw its number shoot up to a 16.2 percent increase, and improve its sales by over 5,000 units. The Toyota Wigo also experienced significant growth with a 27.1 percent increase compared to the previous year. However, all these growth numbers are dwarfed by the Hyundai Accent’s figures, as the Korean make’s sales rose to 44.1 percent compared to 2015’s total numbers.

Honorable mentions

The Mitsubishi L300 and Mitsubishi Montero Sport were also great sellers, although their figures didn’t manage to break the top ten. The L300 moved 11,555 units last year, with sales mostly driven by business owners. Meanwhile, the new-generation Montero Sport sold 10,786 units.

A robust local car industry

The Philippine automotive industry displayed continued growth as it posted a new sales record for 2016. The local market achieved a sales milestone last year when it moved 404,051 vehicles in total, marking a 24.88 percent increase from the previous year. As expected, Toyota lords over the rest of the car brands, boasting a jaw-dropping 39.12 percent market share.
