BUYER'S GUIDE: 2018 MINI One

2018 Mini One

The MINI hatchback is one of the world's most popular small cars. It has already achieved iconic status, and the prestige that precedes it is reason enough to choose this stylish urban rider. Now on its third generation under BMW, this entry-level MINI just keeps getting better and better. Enter the 2018 MINI One. Check out the details of MINI's latest offering below.

Specification

Like most MINI models, the MINI One has a three-door and five-door trim. The three-door is 3821 mm long, 1,932 mm wide (w/mirrors), and 1,414 mm high. The five-door's dimensions are 3,982 mm, 1,932 mm. and 1,425mm, respectively. Power comes from a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gas engine that delivers 102 hp and features MINI Twin Power Turbo Technology. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that delivers its power to 15-inch Heli Spoke alloy wheels in silver finish. Combined fuel consumption using standard wheels and tires is at 61.4 km/L.

Exterior

The distinct MINI styling is on full display here, from the big round headlights, to the gaping grille with high-gloss black blades, along with the inimitable two-tone finish and oval exterior mirrors. Though the front screams entry-level, especially when compared to the classier upper trim, the MINI Cooper, the rear is indistinguishable between the two, as they sport the same chrome-lined taillights, matte black tailgate handle, and MINI badge in the middle.

The exterior may focus on the retro, but inside is every bit as modern as cars get. A raft of technology and style welcomes occupants, including leather seats, onboard computer (for the speedometer, fuel consumption, speed, and range), Shift Point Display, dual-zone automatic climate control, Harman-Kardon hi-fi sound system, MINI’s very own central display with MINI Mobility System and MINI TeleServices, and the witty MINI-MALISM Fuel Saving Technology. Oddly enough, knowing that the MINI One costs a lot less than the next-tier Cooper, buyers will be pleasantly surprised to know that it’s hard to notice any difference between cabin features of the two.

Safety

The 2018 MINI One is inarguably one of the most fun-to-drive cars in any category and any price range, thanks to its near-zero body roll, signature ‘go-kart handling,’ and superior feel through its seat and steering wheel. In crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP back in 2014, the MINI One scored four stars out of five—which is perfectly acceptable for a small car. Other smart safety features include Cornering Brake Control, airbag deactivation, Cruise Control with braking function, and a Dynamic Stability Control system that consists of Automatic Stability Control + Traction, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Drying, and Hill Assist.

Our Verdict

The MINI One used to be the range’s weak point, but with this latest version, that is no longer the case. Buyers get to enjoy a turbocharged gas engine, refined styling elements, and a punchy on-road performance that makes the P2 million+ price tag seem like a good value, and as the brand is known for, buyer's get to customize their MINI however which way they want.
